Treasury: There Will Not be an Internet Tax

As the government appears to be heading to levy new taxes and increase some existing ones, officials released a message on Sunday that there will not be an Internet tax.

An anonymous email which began making the rounds claimed the government was planning such a tax, which would include a tax on emails. Apparently, the baseless message did elicit enough concern that treasury officials felt compelled to release a message denying any such plan.

The email stated the new tax would be levied via one’s ISP (Internet Service Provider) and charges would include 15 agorot per email and 9 agorot per attachment.

Treasury officials insist there was never any plan to impose such a tax.

  1. What a silly thought. How could anyone believe such a thing? As far as I know, the vast majority of emails today goes via webmail services (such as Gmail, Live Mail etc), so it would be a completely idiotic idea.

The idea however has been seriously considered in Europe, in the form of a ‘download tax’ for the music / film industry to offset their losses from illegal downloading / file sharing.
