Family of Hanged Spy Cohen Calls on Pope to Assist

The family of Eli Cohen, the Israeli spy that was hanged and buried in Damascus in 1965, has turned to Pope Benedict XVI, who is visiting in Israel, to intercede on its behalf. Family members came to Jerusalem on Sunday ahead of the ceremony at the President’s Residence, delivering a letter for the pope, asking that he intercede on their behalf following years of failed efforts to have the remains of Eli returned to Israel for burial.

The pope was in the President’s Residence on Monday evening for a gala official welcome headed by President Shimon Peres.
