Shabbos Protest Against Intel & Karta Planned

In keeping with the weekly custom, the shabbos protest against Intel Jerusalem will take place at 11:30am, at the Intel Jerusalem site in Har Chotzvim with rabbonim affiliated with the Eida Chareidis expected to participate. As is the case every week, the Eida is calling on teens and young members of the community not to attend, seeking to keep the event peaceful. Strong language is used in pashkavilim announcing the event against the participation of young males in the community. Parents are urged to supervise their children to make sure they do not attend the protest event.

At 3:15pm, the tzibur is called to take part in protests against the Jerusalem municipality’s opening of Karta parking lot on shabbos. As is usually the case, the event will begin on Meah Shearim Street, with rabbonim giving words of hisorrirus, followed by the walk to Karta.

  1. aren’t they causing more chillul shabbos with their protests,as hundreds of jewish police are forced to be mechallel shabbos in order to put down their riots.
why not protest during the weekdays and avoid more chillul shabbos?
of course we all know the answer, and it is not a pretty one

  2. to #1,
    1) No we dont all know the answer, i don’t your your perceived answer.
    2) sounds logical to protest chilul shabbos on Shabbos.
    3) i suppose you were complaining about the teen violence. Now that there is no violence, you protest about the police’s chilul shabbos.?
    4) without violence there are no riots “to put down”, much to your regret i am postulating.
    5) taking the police’s chillul shabbos into account, is like saying i shoouldn’t report a violent crime, because more violence will be comitted when the perp is arrested! Patently rediculous..
As for the actual merit of the protests, i don’t feel qualified to express an opinion.

  3. Suppose the Eida can NOT change a shabbos minhag, if protests are part of the shabbos routine then protests it will be.

#2BTW at any protest, peaceful or not, a police presence is necessary just to secure safety. Overcrowding causes physical damage, collapse of rooftops, gates, etc. A weekday protest would accomplish the same goal—-which is letting the public know that Shabbos Kodesh is not to be trampled on.

  4. If overcrowding is so bad and caused so much damage, how come no one protests the extreme over crowding ever Shabbos and ever Yom tov at Kosher stores and in the streets in which many such stores are packed together?

I do not think that anyone really accepts the idea that damage is caused just by the fact that many people show up at a peaceful protest.

And the complaint was not about overcrowding anyway, it was about the police being mechalal shabbos which they are doing every Shabbos anyway, whether they are guarding crowds at protests or driving their cars on patrol duty.

Those who’s shift is on Shabbos are working on Shabbos anyway.

  5. The problem is not with the community’s youth. Bochurim from Edah-affiliated yeshivos don’t make trouble.

It’s the outsiders (the shababnikim, but also many Litvishe bochurim, including Americans) who make real problems.
