Generator Explosion on Shabbos in Yerushalayim


Last shabbos, residents of the Kerem Avraham area of the capital was awakened by an explosion, a blast that was caused by a generator situated near the Har Tzvi Shul. Acrid smoke began bellowing from the generator immediately following the powerful blast. It appears that a short circuit in the generator resulted in an explosion, bringing an abrupt end to shabbos electricity for the families running off it on shabbos.

Fire officials were summoned as the threat began heading towards the high voltage lines in the area as the flames emanated from the generator. Dozens of homes were left without electricity.

Due to the life-threatening danger resulting from the blaze involving the area electricity lines, Israel Electric Company technicians were dispatched to the scene, the BaKehilla reports. Non-Jewish municipality workers also arrived and began spreading sand around the area, containing the situation and working to eliminate and dangers to area residents. Baruch Hashem there were no injuries reported.
