The Lubavitcher Rebbe Tried To Obtain Rav Chaim Kanievsky’s Sefer 50 Years Ago

Fifty years ago, on 2 Nissan 5727, the Lubavitcher Rebbe ZT”L instructed his secretary HaRav Chaim Mordechai Isaac Chadakov Z”L to write a letter to Chabad askan and Yerushalmi Rav Uziel Zeilig Slonim Z”L, who was among the heads of Kollel Chabad and prominent askan in Israel.

In the beginning of the letter, Rav Slonim is asked to “Do your absolute best to get hold of all the seforim which have yet to be sent here and take advantage of the travels of talmidim who live here to facilitate getting them here”.

That same year, talmidim of Kvutza of Yeshivas Chabad studied in NYC before Pesach and this provided an opportunity to send packages with them.

The letter continues “I am speaking about the son of the Steipler, HaRav Kanievsky, who published a sefer Marei Mekomos and sources of the Rambam. Please buy it for us and send it here with those coming here”.

  1. The English description of the message is not accurate. The original complains that various seforim which had been requested have not been sent. And it points out that since bochurim are now travelling from Israel to the USA, the seforim could be sent with them and not need to pay for postage.
Then it has a second paragraph saying that the son of the Steipler has published a Sefer of references and sources of the Rambam (the name is not given but it is Kiryas Melech) and asking him to buy that also and send it. I think it was published shortly before this time.
