President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that major developments could soon emerge from ongoing negotiations with Iran, while warning that any attack resulting in the deaths of American troops could quickly trigger renewed military action.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office during an announcement on clean coal, Trump hinted that another international conflict may soon be resolved through diplomacy.
“A lot of people would say that I’ve ended eight wars and soon to be a ninth,” Trump said. “I hope that works out to, you know, frankly, it’s probably, and there’s another one also that could be 10.”
His comments came shortly after he said earlier this week that talks with Iran are progressing positively.
“Going very well,” Trump said of the negotiations. “If it happens, it could happen over the weekend.”
Trump also touted the impact of recent military operations against Iran, claiming the country’s armed forces and military leadership had been devastated.
“There’s no Navy. There’s no Air Force. We’ve wiped them out. We’ve wiped out their leadership and almost all of it,” Trump said.
“They had to get new generals. And then after that, they didn’t get more new generals,” he added.
“And, we knocked out their anti-aircraft, their air force, just about everything you can knock out.”
“It is unbelievable. We knocked out everything there is to knock out,” Trump continued.
Asked what could lead to a resumption of military action, Trump pointed to the possibility of American casualties.
“Well, it would be a good reason. I’d be honest with you. Yeah, if they kill U.S. troops, I think I would do that very quickly,” he said.
President Trump says he spoke with the Hezbollah terror group about a possible ceasefire in Lebanon, indicating that he believes progress is being made toward stopping fighting there.
“They didn’t reject me,” he says of a US-brokered ceasefire proposal that Hezbollah appeared to refuse earlier in the day. “They called us, and they said, ‘ How about stopping.’ And I think you’re going to see things happen over there.”
“It would be really nice if Lebanon could have some peace,” adds Trump, addressing reporters from the Oval Office. “I spoke to Bibi Netanyahu about that, and I speak to [Lebanon] about it and I actually spoke to Hezbollah about it. And I think progress is made.”
