Upon arrival, Shomrim members were unable to located the man and a search of nearby apartments resulted in no evidence of a burglary having been carried out. Several minutes later, Shomrim received another call, this time from an individual reporting that a male suspect was running through backyards after robbing an apartment. Shomrim members quickly responded to Hewes Street between Lee and Marcy, where the call had come in, and maintained visual contact on the suspect as he dashed from yard to yard in an attempt to make his getaway. Eventually the suspect reached the Sambertheli shul, where Shomrim members were waiting for him. The NYPD had arrived at that time, and the suspect was taken into custody. It was subsequently determined that the thief had broken into several apartments. It wasn’t immediately clear what, if anything, he had stolen. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Flatbush Shomrim Busts 4 Thieves With DOZENS Of Stolen Packages, Van; Urges Community to Be Vigilant [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

Flatbush Shomrim is warning NYC residents to be vigilant of packages arriving to their homes, as the organization has been inundated with calls relating to stolen boxes and packages in recent weeks. In one instance, Flatbush Shomrim received multiple calls on Monday afternoon of packages being stolen in the area of Ave. W and East 3rd St. An eyewitness to the thefts managed to snap a photo of the van being used by at least some of the suspects who were stealing packages, and Shomrim distributed the photo to its patrol members. At approximately 1:30 am Tuesday morning, Shomrim members on night patrol spotted the vehicle in question parked in the area of Ave. P and Ocean Parkway. A cursory look inside the vehicle confirmed to the members that it was indeed the one they were looking for, as it contained multiple packages and Amazon boxes which were presumably stolen. Shomrim volunteers staked out the area for over an hour before observing two individuals holding additional packages entering the van and driving off. Shomrim immediately activated the NYPD, who performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Quentin Road and East 2nd Street, during which time police searched the van and found it laden with dozens of stolen boxes and packages. Additionally, the NYPD found that the van itself was a stolen vehicle. The two individuals were arrested and are facing charges. In a second incident just a few hours later, Flatbush Shomrim received a hotline call reporting a package being stolen on Ave. Y and East 3rd Street on Tuesday morning. Responding members observed two individuals carrying stolen packages in the area and the members immediately activated the police who responded to the scene, stopped the suspects, and took them into custody. Shomrim reminds everyone to keep their eyes out for arriving packages and to take them indoors as soon as possible. It is also crucial that the police be notified if a package is stolen, because if Shomrim spots the suspects, the perps cannot be arrested unless there is an open police report on them. If you see a package being stolen, call 911 and Flatbush Shomrim’s 24/7 Emergency Hotline 718-338-9797 (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Urgent Message From BP Shomrim after National Grid Employee Robs Home

Shomrim of Boro Park is urging residents to be vigilant of their valuables following a disturbing incident on Tuesday that was thankfully resolved with their assistance. According to Shomrim sources who spoke with YWN, a frum home in Boro Park was visited on Tuesday by a legitimate National Grid employee who was conducting routine and required inspections. After the female inspector left the home, the homeowner made a startling discovery – her pocketbook was missing. She immediately phoned Shomrim and apprised them of the situation, who sent units to respond to the scene. After initial fact-gathering, Shomrim members determined that the pocketbook was most likely stolen by the inspector. Shomrim phoned a high-ranking supervisor within National Grid and sent additional units to canvass the area in search of the inspector. Following a short search, the inspector was located several blocks away and, as presumed, was in possession of the stolen pocketbook. Shomrim notified the NYPD, who responded to the location and arrested the thief/inspector, and returned the pocketbook to its rightful owner. In the wake of this incident, Shomrim is urging everyone to be careful when allowing National Grid or other companies’ employees into your home. Keep valuables hidden and keep a watchful of the inspector’s actions. While the employees may be in your home legitimately, they may not always be the most upstanding citizens, and being cognizant of that could save you a lot of money and heartache. CROWN HEIGHTS: Jewish Man Fights Off Attempted Gun-Point Mugging; Shomrim And NYPD Respond

A young Jewish man was the victim of an apparent attempted robbery Tuesday morning on Montgomery between Kingston and Albany in Crown Heights, when three black males approached the victim and brandished a gun. According to YWN sources, no words were exchanged between the aggressors and their victim, likely because the victim began fighting back before they could make their demands. Surveillance footage provided to YWN of the incident shows the Jewish boy wearing a hoodie and backpack as the three black males exit a Honda vehicle and approach him. The victim walked past the perps and, after running up to the victim, one of the males tapped him and displayed a firearm. The boy instinctively began fighting back, scaring off the trio, who went back to the vehicle and drove off. Crown Heights Shomrim and the NYPD arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and are now searching for the suspects. As per the NYPD, the license plate does not match the car that was used in the incident, thus complicating search efforts. The victim was thankfully not injured in the incident. Shomrim are currently searching the streets for additional security-camera footage to be able to assist the NYPD with their investigation. If you have any information which can assist the investigation, please call 911 and the Crown Heights Shomirm 24 hour emergency hotline at 718-774-3333. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

High Level Israeli Officials Meet with Flatbush Shomrim, Hoping to Score Practical Advice [PHOTOS]

(By Sandy Eller) A group of more than 40 senior Israeli officials met with members of Flatbush Shomrim in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon, hoping to gain insights that will benefit them on their home turf. The meeting was arranged by Moshe Samuels, creator of The New Jew, an Israeli documentary that cast the media spotlight on American Judaism. Having filmed a segment of the series in Brooklyn in conjunction with Flatbush Shomrim in the pre-COVID days, Samuels reached out to Shomrim executive coordinator Bob Moskovitz to arrange a fall visit with the Israeli Local Authorities group, which was comprised of mayors, city council members and directors of regional and local councils. The delegates were an extremely diverse group, representing Israel’s Jewish, Muslim and Druze observant and secular communities, their visit to New York providing them with an opportunity to learn more about Jewish life in the United States. “When I received the email, I was actually very flattered that they were reaching out to us and at the same time curious what wisdom we could impart,” Moskovitz told Yeshiva World News. “They wanted to see what it is we do, what our relationship with the police department is like, to know how we face with anti-Semitism today and to hear about hate crimes against Jews so that they could go back to their municipalities and see if there was anything they could build on.” The meeting was held at Congregation Shaare Shalom on Avenue S, with approximately a dozen Flatbush Shomrim members also in attendance. Moskovitz, his fellow coordinators Steve Weill and Naftali Rosenberg all addressed the group, explaining how Shomrim works and the scope of its operations. Expounding on that theme, Moskovitz discussed some of the differences between Israel’s Civil Guard and Shomrim – while both are focused on security, Shomrim’s broad array of services also includes dealing with missing persons and domestic issues, gathering video footage to help fight crime, delivering oxygen concentrators during COVID and helping with storm relief after Hurricane Sandy. “We explained how callers are happy to work with us because we have a warm Jewish heart,” said Moskovitz. “These people are our brethren and we care and they know that.” The meeting also included a visit to Shomrim’s mobile command center, which in addition to being called into service to locate missing persons, is also deployed to act as a deterrent in high crime areas, sometimes by NYPD request. One question raised by the Israeli delegates was how Flatbush Shomrim makes arrests. “We told them that in Israel, the Civil Guard can do that, but we don’t do that here,” said Moskovitz. “We wanted to impart to them that we are not vigilantes – we follow the letter of the law, which is why the NYPD and local precincts work with us.” The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides feeling that it had been a successful afternoon. “When they left, we got a lot of ‘kol hakavods’ and pats on the back,” said Moskovitz. “They were very impressed and considering that there a lot of patrols and a lot of organizations here in Flatbush we were honored that they asked to meet with us.” Photo Credits: Lensky Photo (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Shomrim London In Past 24 Hours Say Multiple Victims Have Phones Stolen By Suspects On Bikes

In the last 24 hours Shomrim NW London have received multiple reports of criminals who have used bikes and mopeds to snatch mobile phones from people across Golders Green NW11 and Hendon NW4. Shomrim NW London are working closely with local Police to gather CCTV footage to ascertain the identity of the suspects. Often victims are approached from behind while talking or texting on phones. Criminals on mopeds or bicycles may mount the pavement to grab the phone or snatch it from the road. Sometimes when it’s a moped, a pillion passenger will snatch it. Criminals are known to operate during the day. Follow these simple steps to help protect your phone. – Be aware of your surroundings. – If you need to call or use your phone on the street, look out for anyone on a bike or a moped near you. – Look up, look out – Make it quick so you don’t become distracted. – Don’t text while you’re walking – you won’t notice what’s going on around you. – If that’s not possible, stand away from the roadside, close to a building or wall, so no one can come up behind you. – Going hands-free can prevent a thief from snatching your phone out of your hand. – Use the keypad lock / finger print or facial recognition so that thieves cannot immediately access your phone. – Your phone may have other security features you can use – these could allow you to wipe data, lock your handset, or prevent a thief from restoring a phone to its factory settings from another internet device. – Consider installing an anti-theft app. These can be an effective way of helping police trace your phone and identify the thief. – Every phone has a unique IMEI number which helps police and insurance companies to identify it if it’s stolen and stop a stolen phone from working. – Find your IMEI number by dialing *#06# from your phone and keep a written note of it. If you have been a victim please report to the Police on 999 and Shomrim NW London on 03009991234. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

MI K’AMCHA YISROEL: Hatzolah, Shomrim, Chaverim Answer Staggering 5,000 Calls In Under 5 Hours [SEE THE NUMBERS]

As Ida struck the Tri-State area last night, thousands of people instinctively reached out to major Chesed organizations Hatzolah, Shomrim and Chaverim for assistance in various types of emergencies. These organization have proven themselves once again to be the backbone of the Tri-State area Orthodox Jewish communities. Dozens upon dozens of elderly victims were rescued by volunteers from the above three organizations from flooded basements and taken to safety. Chaverim and Shomrim helped hundreds of residents pump water out of their basements. They responded to hundreds of calls for standard motorists, who were frightened and crying as they abandoned their vehicles in strange areas with no one to help them. Our communities owe a debt of Hakoras Hatov not only to the hundreds of volunteers who responded to these emergencies in the deadly weather – risking their own lives at many times to save others, but the dispatchers who fielded these thousands of phone calls. Working under intense pressure and trying to keep people calm, these dispatchers triaged and dispatched the high-priority calls first. The following numbers were put together by YWN after speaking to many organizations: Central Hatzolah (covering the entire NYC) received over 350 emergency medical calls in just a few hours. Shomrim in NYC (separate hotlines for Williamsburg, Boro Park, Flatbush, Crown Heights, Far Rockaway) had around 2,000 calls. Chaverim of NYC (and Catskills) had 1,300 calls. Rockland Chaverim answered nearly 1,100 calls for help. In Kiryas Joel, Chaverim responded to around 350 calls. Lakewood had around 150 calls. That is a whopping 5,200 calls in just a few hours! In Williamsburg, the sheer number of call volume was so overwhelming, that Chaveirim of Lakewood dispatched a crew of ten volunteers to travel to Williamsburg with heavy equipment to assist local residents. The Lakewood volunteers were in Williamsburg until 5:00AM. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Video footage tweeted by Flatbush Shomrim shows the 41-year-old Orthodox Jewish man walking to Shul when two men approached him from behind and repeatedly punched him in the face with a closed fist, shortly after 5:45 a.m. Friday. The man was not taken to a hospital and refused medical attention at the scene. Police said the suspects took the man’s Tefillin bag and ran. Thankfully, Shomrim recovered the mans Tefillin a few blocks away. The victim, Levi Zupnik, says that he never saw his attackers, and no words were exchanged before the assault took place. He quickly ran to a nearby home and rang the bell while simultaneously calling Flatbush Shromim, who in turn called 911. Both Shomrim and the NYPD arrived on the scene in minutes, but both attackers had fled the area. The NYPD and Flatbush Shomrim have both increased their patrols in the neighborhood, and Shomrim offered $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. This pair viciously assaulted and robbed a local resident on his way to Shul this morning. Residents of Modi’in Illit Launch “Shomrim” In Order To Combat Break-Ins By Palestinian Thieves

Over the past few weeks, there has been a wave of crime in the Chareidi city of Modi’in Illit and it is suspected of being perpetrated by Arab thieves coming from nearby Palestinian villages. The suspects have been tearing holes in the town’s security fence and entering the city in order to steal from private homes. Thus far, there has been no real response from the IDF or the police. On Tuesday morning, local residents gathered together in order to protect their homes and succeeded in apprehending a number of infiltrators. The first infiltrator was spotted at around 3:00AM, having entered via a hole in the security fence. A second Arab was located several hours later. They were both handed over to the police, who placed them under arrest. As a result of the break-ins, many residents instituted a local patrol which they are calling Ha’Shomrim, a volunteer patrol force comprised of young men who are all residents of the city itself. One of the new group’s volunteers told reporters: “We’re happy that Ha’Shomrim now exists, and we’re determined to do our job properly.” However, he stressed that “although up until now, those Arabs who have broken into the city undoubtedly came to steal from the residents, they could equally have been terrorists planning attacks. In fact, several have been armed with tear gas canisters, and there have also been reports of infiltrators armed with knives, though that hasn’t been confirmed. The response of residents here has been incredibly supportive. After several months of break-ins, about eight or nine such incidents, we realized that we would have to take matters into our own hands, as there had been no IDF or police response to people entering the city via holes in the security fence.” He added, “The municipality wasn’t entirely on-board but after a few weeks we straightened things out with them and now they’re doing all they can to support us.” A police statement noted that: “Police forces operating at enhanced strength against attempts to break into the city of Modi’in Illit heard cries from a private yard. A police unit sent to the scene located a Palestinian suspect in the yard and arrested him. “A short while later, another report was received regarding a Palestinian suspect who had been apprehended by a number of local residents. Police forces who arrived at the scene identified the suspect who was wounded and he was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

TODAY: Boro Park Shomrim Bike Registration

Boro Park Shomrim (BSSP) is having their annual bike etching registrations today, Sunday. If a stolen bike is recovered by Shomrim, they will be able to locate its proper owner through the numbers etched in your bike. Last year, many bicycles which had been previously registered were stolen, and police later recovered many of them – and the owners got them back. In contrast, bike owners who don’t register bikes that later get stolen almost never recover their cycles; even if the police later find a bunch of stolen bikes, it’s almost impossible to match a particular bike back up with its owner if there is no registration number, and such recovered bikes are usually auctioned off by the Police Department, along with other unclaimed recovered merchandise. The event will be held from 2:00PM – 6:00PM at 18th Avenue and 56th Street (18th Avenue Park). PLEASE PRE-REGISTER FOR THE EVENT BY VISITING BPSHOMRIM.BIKE
