BP Shomrim Uses Its New High-Def Surveillance Cams To Reunite Meshulach With His Tallis And Tefillin

A meshulach whose tallis, tefillin and several expensive personal items were inadvertently left in a ridesharing car service vehicle was successfully reunited with them on Wednesday thanks to Boro Park Shomrim and high-definition surveillance footage cameras it has recently installed, Boro Park Scoop reported Wednesday. The story began two days prior when the meshulach, who had flown from Eretz Yisroel to JFK, hired a car service to transport him and his luggage from the airport to Boro Park. Once at his destination, he unloaded his packages and the car service left. Only later did the meshulach notice that he had made a terrible mistake – leaving his tallis, tefillin, and a bag of other expensive items in the vehicle. With no way to identify or contact the driver, the meshulach reached out to a friend in Kiryas Yoel, who in turn contacted Boro Park Shomrim. Members began combing through footage captured by HD cameras that Shomrim had recently and fortuitously installed in the area where the meshulach had been dropped off. In a short amount of time, they managed to obtain the license plate number, offering a major crack in the case. Shomrim promptly pulled up the name of the driver and obtained his contact information, then called him to explain what had happened. The driver kindly returned to the place where he had originally dropped the meshulach off, returning the worldly and spiritual items that had been left in his car. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Flatbush Shomrim Warns of New Scam Targeting Businesses

Flatbush Shomrim is urging businesses to be wary of transactions being made on credit card processors after an individual attempted to steal thousands of dollars from multiple businesses. Sources tell YWN that the scammer first targeted grocery store on Nostrand Avenue between Ave. I and Ave. J. He picked up several products and went to check out, telling the cashier that he didn’t have his credit card on him and requesting to punch the numbers in manually on the store’s mobile credit card processor. The cashier obliged and handed over the machine. But instead of putting in a credit card number, the thief placed a different transaction – to give himself a $3,000 “refund.” He then left the grocery and went to a nearby restaurant where he pulled the same scam, this time for the sum of $1,000. Shomrim is now urging businesses to be wary of anyone requesting to purchase items by manually putting in their payment info, as well as advising them to check all transactions immediately after they are placed. Flatbush Shomrim “Shabbos Patrol” Helps Arrest Two Career Burglars After Home Invasion On Avenue L

Residents in Flatbush are used to seeing marked Flatbush Shomrim vehicles on patrol every Friday night and Yomim Tovim, making sure the streets stay safe. The Shabbos Patrol is manned by armed off-duty and retired NYPD Officers, who work in close coordination with the local Precincts. They are responsible for preventing many crimes, and this Friday night, two major arrests were made. Sources tell YWN that one of the Shomrim vehicles was flagged down by a homeowner on Ave L & East 27 Street and said a burglar was inside him home. The off-duty NYPD Officer quickly called for NYPD backup as well as another Shomrim vehicle to respond. Before Shomrim was able to get into the home, the burglar fled on foot, but the off-duty NYPD Officer noticed a van that was parked across the street which didn’t look like it belonged there. As suspected, the van was acting as a “lookout” and was LOADED with stolen goods in the back on the van. Police took the driver into custody. Meanwhile, the burglar began calling the cell phone of the driver (now in custody) to find out where he was. Police tracked the phone of the burglar after having his phone number, and took him into custody a short while later on Flatbush Avenue. Flatbush Shomrim Executive Coordinator Bob Moskovitz in a short statement to YWN praised the Shabbos patrol for their hard work every week. “This week it was two arrests, last week they assisted with a Pikuach Nefesh of a young sick child. It’s every single week that our team of professionals work closely with the NYPD in making arrests and keeping the community safe – in many different ways. We are thrilled with the partnership we have with the NYPD, and want to publicly thank the members of our Shabbos patrol”. The NYPD lauded Flatbush Shomrim in multiple tweets sent out by the Department: Just before midnight on Friday, officers from the @NYPD70Pct responded to a burglary call in Brooklyn. With the assistance of @FlatbushShomrim, the officers were able to make two arrests, including a career criminal who is on parole with an active warrant. https://t.co/6xdYSPY0Be — NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) January 15, 2023 (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

It began at around 4:40AM Monday morning, when Shomrim began receiving multiple calls to their hotline reporting two black male suspects walking up driveways in the vicinity of East 4th Street between Avenues L and M. Numerous Flatbush Shomrim and NYPD units responded surrounded the area, and before the NYPD arrived, the perpetrators had already hid in a backyard. Flatbush Shomrim is warning residents of a brazen new scam in which people come knocking directly at your door and claim to be city workers attempting to prevent scams, all in an attempt to get hold of personal and sensitive information they can then exploit. Shomrim said they responded to an incident in which a scammer showed up to a resident’s door with one of the inhabitant’s name and bank and proceeded to push for further information. The fraudster insisted that she was from NYC’s Department of Aging which she claimed was notified by the bank about suspicious activity on the resident’s associated account. In the video below, when asked for identification, the scammer said she had left it in her vehicle, and kept pushing for the woman to open the door. Flatbush Shomrim reached out to NYC’s Department of Aging, which confirmed that no such program exists and that the incident was indeed a scam. Shomrim is now alerting residents of Flatbush and beyond to never allow an unidentified person into her home, even if they’re claiming to be helping you and has some of your personal information. Ocean County Corrections PBA, Shomrim, Police Team Up at Lakewood Carasaljo [PHOTOS]

Approximately one dozen people led by Ocean County Corrections PBA 258 gathered Friday at Lakewood’s Lake Carasaljo to clean and beautify the area, clearing garbage, debris, and even discarded bikes and tires from one of the town’s most popular recreational spaces. PBA officials were joined at the cleanup by additional volunteers from the Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch, National Chaplains Association, and the Lakewood Police Department’s Water Rescue and Bike Units, whose officers joined in the endeavor after concluding unrelated training at the lake. The effort, organized and led by PBA 258 president Matthew Stillwell and Rebecca Roth, was the first in a planned series of events and activities by PBA 258 to “give back” to the communities it already serves with distinction. As the state delegate for PBA 258, Ms. Roth says officials are always searching for ways to connect with the community on a more personal level and extend their efforts to residents of the region they serve, including in ways that are beyond the scope of their official duties. “Life can often be trying, and it can be hard to find the good on some days. But when you can’t find the good, be the good. Today’s cleanup was just a small measure of that guiding philosophy,” Roth said. “Unlike other agencies, residents don’t see us on their streets and don’t know us. Efforts like today’s is part of our efforts to break down those walls of anonymity,” she added. Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said it was heartening to see the efforts PBA 258 and the other volunteers extended to beautification of the township’s lake. “It is always gratifying to see folks getting together to improve conditions in town, especially in helping to clean around one of Lakewood’s crown jewels, Lake Carasaljo,” said Mayor Coles. “I want to extend the thanks of the Township Committee and all residents of Lakewood to the Corrections Department PBA 258 for volunteering their time and efforts today.” Lakewood Committeeman Albert Akerman noted how the PBA officials were taking off of their personal time to assist a community it serves. “The cleanup is a really nice gesture by the Department of Corrections,” said Lakewood Committeeman Albert Akerman. “These officers work hard all week and chose to spend some of their time off beautifying our lake, rather than taking a break and relaxing. It’s truly inspiring and speaks to their level of dedication to the community.” Ocean County Corrections PBA 258’s officials insist, however, that they are only doing what they love – lending a hand to the people that rely on them. “There is nothing more rewarding than the Ocean County Corrections PBA 258 giving back to the people and community of Lakewood and Ocean County,” said Ocean County Corrections Warden Joseph Valenti. “We strive to do whatever we can for the people of Lakewood and Ocean County; there isn’t much we find more fulfilling and true to the fundamental principles of our jobs.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)
