Deri Remains Optimistic Ahead of Elections

A guest on Channel 10 TV’s Election Headquarters (מטה בחירות) program, Shas co-leader Aryeh Deri remained optimistic as he and Shas’ policies were questioned and challenged.

When asked why Shas continues presenting lists for Knesset that are void of a single woman, Deri explained “one must understand the culture and the norm for Shas voters. They do not wish to see a woman and our women are not seeking to run”.

When asked to comment on his policy vis-à-vis land concession to the PA following the expulsion in Gush Katif in 2005, during which Shas was a coalition member, he stated “Maran Rav Ovadia’s position remains clear. The rav feels that human life has a higher sanctity than land, and for true peace, land concessions are permitted.” Deri added that the Gaza model however has shown us that following an Israeli withdrawal, Hamas moves in and rockets follow, stating at present, Israel must be cautious regarding additional land concessions in areas of Yehuda and Shomron since PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) remains weak and it is possible that within a year of Israel leaving areas, Hamas will take control and the realities of Gaza will be mimicked in those areas.

Deri refrained from stating an actual number but remained very optimistic indicating Shas “will surprise” and earn more seats than even the most optimistic polls predict.
