Bloomberg: $8.00 to enter Manhattan

toll booth.jpgNYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg might be reviving his idea to charge drivers coming into Manhattan. The plan includes an $8.00 toll to discourage cars from coming into Manhattan to reduce traffic. The Triple A says they will fight the plan. since its another tax on motorists who already pay the highest tolls and gas prices in the country. The mayor is expected to revive the concept Sunday when he gives an Earth Day address.

  1. From what I read in AAA Car and Travel Magazine, it only applies during certain hours and below 60th Street (the bridges, midtown tunnel and 59th Street Bridge). Depending on your origin and destination, you could take the GCP to the Triboro to 125th Street and head south from there.

  2. Todays politicians are forgetting what started this country in the first place! Keep on taxing the people and we will have a lot more than the Boston tea party!

  3. The proposal would exempt the FDR and West Side Highway. It would apply 6 AM to 6 PM weekdays. And it would effectively allow free use of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel or other Manhattan crossings that have a toll (since it would provide a credit equal to the toll towards the $8 charge for any bridge/tunnel toll that was paid to get into Manhattan.)

  4. How would they know where I am getting off or that I am staying on the FDR all the way to brooklyn?? Wll they have toll booths on all exits in NYC?? That will make so much traffic on the FDR, or the West Side hgwy he wishes he would have never thought of such a crazy idea.

  5. No toll boths. Like London, cameras will record license plates and automatcally bill the associated e-zpass account. Otherwise they will mail a bill directly to the car owner (if no e-zpass account for that plate number.)

  6. If they would charge mayors $8.00 for every stupid thing they say, we would solve all fiscal problems in the city, and it would provide incentive for people to continue to vote for dopes like Blumbering Blumbety Blumbum Veggie Berg. Win win situation for all!

  7. Michael Taxberg has never hidden his agenda. From the day he stepped into office, he began raising taxes and fees on everything. Remeber the 25% property tax increase? The increase for the Port Authority tolls? The increase for the MTA tolls? The increase for subway fares? The increase to the SALES tax rate!!!!! (okay I know that that has to do with the state and he can’t be held accountable for that or the copepods in the water). The attempt to bring back the commuter tax? The attempt to raise the gasoline tax? Did I leave anything out?

He ran as “a leader, not a politician”. That means businessman, and like any successful businessman, he takes small change out of many pockets to collect for the top (in this business, the city). Kind of like Robbing Hood if you know what I mean. If you don’t like it don’t vote for him. I know I didn’t. Unfortunately, my vote is not worth enough or we wouldn’t have had any of this nor spent our Clinton surplus on a 50 year Iraq war that will leave us in debt beyond our lifetimes.

  8. The system in London works like E-z pass You have to register beforehand to get the right to pay and enter. If you don’t, you get a fine. The system there has not effectively reduced congestion, even after raising the fee from 5 pounds to 10, so there is no reason to think it will help here.

One major difference that I see is that Central london can be bypassed. You really only need to go through if you want to be IN central London. Manhattan is kind of in the way if you are coming from other boroughs and to avoid it would mean taking new routes. The best they can do is say that the FDR and the West Side Hwy are not included, but if you use the Lincoln tunnel this gets tricky and you lose a number of approaches.

I don’t think he will get this passed. I just hold my breath and hope that he will go away soon (along with Bush) and that whoever comes next can do some damage control. I also hope that these political financial failures won’t lead the sheep to vote cross party without thinking.
