    Summer Camp or Bust

Your Bedwetting Child Can Do It!

    By Lyn Mettler

An estimated five to seven million children in the U.S. wet their beds, according to the National Kidney Foundation. And many of them successfully make the trip to overnight camp every year.

He suggests trying to eliminate the problem before kids head off to camp. First, he says to try limiting the amount of liquid your child drinks at night and encouraging them to use the bathroom before bedtime.

If your child continues to wet the bed there are other options that may help, such as a moisture alarm. The alarm sounds as soon as it detects the first bit of moisture, helping your child learn to feel when his bladder is full and when he is about to wet the bed. The National Kidney Foundation says moisture alarms have the highest long-term success rate.

    Bedwetting Help is Here!

But sometimes the inevitable happens and other children find out. In that case, Huff says they explain that everyone has wet the bed at some time in their life, even as a baby. Two of the core values of their camp are respect and caring, so teasing is never accepted.

    FLOWERS AND GREENS

A beautiful long-standing Shavuot tradition is the decoration of our homes and shuls (synagogues) with fragrant flowers, leaves, tree branches, and greens. Many reasons have been given for this custom.

Flowers: Our Sages taught that although Har Sinai was situated in a desert, in honor of the Torah the desert bloomed and sprouted flowers.

Greens: Our Sages taught that on Shavuot judgment is rendered regarding the trees of the field.

    TIKUN LAIL SHAVUOT

A well established Minhag (custom) calls for all-night Torah study on the first night of Shavuot, because on the day the Bnei Yisroel were to receive the Torah, the nation overslept. As an atonement, the Zohar says that certain pious individuals would remain awake the entire night of Shavuot as a means to rectify this lapse.

In some congregations, Rabbis lecture deep into the night, either to enable the entire congregation to study the same topic or perhaps to accommodate those who are not capable of studying by themselves, (or perhaps to put some congregants to sleep – only kidding).

    DAIRY MEALS

It is customary to eat a dairy meal at least once on Shavuot. Others eat dairy products (but not hard cheese) before the main (meat) lunch meal.

There are several reasons given by our Sages for the custom of eating a dairy meal on Shavuot. One of them is, that on Shavuot, the Bnei Yisroel had just received the Torah (and the laws of Kashrut therein), and they did not have both meat and dairy dishes yet, and were unable to use their dishes that day (Shabbat) until they were rendered Kosher by the proper process of “kashering” utensils. Thus their meal was a dairy meal.

Another reason is that the Torah is compared to Milk.

The word for milk, Chalav, has the numerical value of 40, corresponding to the 40 days Moses spent on Har Sinai.

    AKDAMUT

On the first day of Shavuot, after the Kohain has been called to the Torah, but before he recites his blessing, Akdamut is read responsively, the chazzan saying two verses, and the congregation saying the next two. It was composed as an introduction to the Aseret Hadibrot. Consisting of ninety verses, composed by Rabbi Meir ben Yitzchak, it is probably one of Judaism’s best known and most beloved Piyut (liturgical poem). It is a description of Hashem’s creation of the world and close look at the splendors of Olam Habah (the World to Come). It describes the Malachim’s praise of Hashem and the greatness and the suffering of Bnei Yisroel.

    MEGILLAT (THE SCROLL OF) RUTH

Megillat Ruth is read on the second day of Shavuot, before the reading of the Torah. Many reasons are given for this practice:

The entire Torah is loving kindness, and this Megillah consists of loving kindness, therefore it is read on the day of the giving of the Torah (Midrash Rabbah).

The act of Ruth’s conversion took place during the harvest season, ‘at the beginning of the barley harvest’ to the ‘end of the wheat harvest.’ This period includes the Yom Tov Shavuot.

Matan Torah marks the beginning of the Jewish Nation, when they entered into the Covenant with Hashem. Megillat Ruth tells how Ruth entered into that Covenant.

Subject: Ten reasons for celebrating Purim.

    1. Making noise in shul is a mitzvah.

    2. Levity is not reserved for the Levites.

    3. If you’re having a bad hair day, you can always wear a mask & no one will know who you are.

    4. Purim is easier to spell than Khanuka, Chanukah, Chanuka, Hanuka — the Hebrew name for the Festival of Lights.

    5. You don’t have to kasher your home and change all the pots and dishes.

    6. You don’t have to build a sukkah and eat outside.

    7. You get to drink wine & you don’t have to stand for Kiddush.

    8. Mordechai – 1; Haman – 0.

    9. You won’t get hit in the eye by a lulav.

    10. You can’t eat hamentaschen on Yom Kippur.

    11. Mordechai – 1 ; Haman – 0!!!!

    Subject: White House Purim.

The first Jewish President of the United States has been inaugurated, and the first Jewish holiday that follows is Purim. So he calls up his mother to invite her to the White House for Purim.

Their conversation goes something like this:

Prez: Mom, with Purim being the first holiday after my inauguration, I want to celebrate it with us at the White House.

Mom: Oh, I don’t know. I’ll have to get to the airport and…

Prez: Mom! I’m the President of the United States! I’ll send a limo for you to take you right to the airport!

Mom: OK, but when I get to the airport, I’ll have to stand on the line to buy a ticket and check my baggage. Oh, it will be so difficult for me.

Prez: Mom, don’t worry about standing on lines or any of that. I’m the most powerful person in the world. I’m the President. I’ll send Air Force One for you!!

Mom: Well, OK. But when I get to Washington, I’ll have to find a cab and…

Prez: Momma, please! I’ll have a helicopter waiting for you. It will bring right to the White House lawn!!!

Mom: Well, yeah. But where will I stay? Can I get a hotel room…

Prez: Momma, we have this whole big White House!!!! There will be plenty of room!!!! Please join us for Purim?

    Mom: Ok, I’ll be there.

Two seconds later, she calls her friend:

Mom: Hello, Sadie?!! Guess what? I’m spending Purim at my son’s house!!

    Sadie: Oh, the doctor?

    Mom: No, the other one.

Barack Obama is thus only the second president in history ever to hold a White House Hanukkah party. The fact that he is limiting his guest list to the 400 Jews who are nearest and dearest to him is surely less noteworthy than how much America has changed since Calvin Coolidge lit up the first White House Christmas tree and paid no attention to Hanukkah at all.
