Bloomberg Says Quinn Would Be ‘a Very Good Mayor

Three days before she’s scheduled to walk down the aisle, City Council Speaker Christine Christine Quinn got a mighty nice gift from Mayor Bloomberg — a virtual endorsement to become his successor.

“Chris Quinn is very competent and would be a very good mayor,” Bloomberg declared today.

He was responding to a question about whether his feelings about Quinn have changed now that the Council has passed two pieces of legislation he opposes that would force businesses with city contracts to pay higher wages.

“She’s one voice in the City Council. I’ve always thought that Chris Quinn has done a very good job as the Speaker and it’s not for me to take sides– certainly not now — in a race where I don’t even know who’s going to be running,” the mayor said, before tossing the political bouquet.

Mayoral aides insisted his comments were not an endorsement in the 2013 race.

But Bloomberg, who has maintained a close relationship with Quinn over the years, has never said anything similar about her Democratic rivals for the mayor’s job.
