SMILE FOR THE CAMERA: NYC’s Speed Cameras Now Running 24/7/365

Traffic cameras in New York City will now be on 24/7 as part of the city’s efforts to lower traffic fatalities. Until now, the cameras were only on between 6 am and 10 pm on weekdays, which caused the cameras to miss 59% of fatal MVAs, according to city statistics.

A law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul last month allowed city officials to turn the cameras on full-time, which they decided to do beginning August 1st.

2,000 speed cameras are now running 24 hours a day, including on weekends and holidays. If caught by a camera, drivers will receive a $50 fine in the mail, which experts say is more than enough to deter drivers from speeding again, despite the fines not resulting in points on a driver’s license.

The default speed limit in New York City is 25 mph and camera tickets will be sent to those going 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit.

“New Yorkers deserve to be safe on our streets 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and keeping our cameras on is a critical step in that direction,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “Speed cameras work. They save lives, reduce speeding, and help protect New Yorkers all across the city. And we are expanding this proven program to ensure that New Yorkers have that protection at any time of any day.”

  1. Traffic cameras in New York City will now be on 24/7 as part of the city’s efforts to lower traffic fatalities.
This is the biggest farce since vision zero began. The Democrat, liberal, leftist, wokeist love to couch their twist agenda in lofty and feel-good terms (sic) You won’t find them using the word car accident anymore now it’s car violence. Well, if you say it like that of course you need camaras 24/7. We must stop those aggressive, gas guzzling monsters. Of course, there is no mention of banning those dangerous e-bikes and scooters that do whatever they please on our streets. There is no mention of outreach to pedestrians who play Russian roulette with cars as they cross against the light while being distracted on their cell phones.

  2. Just another way of DemoncRats of Taxing their citizens. Another way of Stuffing their Pockets with our hard earned Money. Where is the statistic of “the cameras miss 59% of fatal MVAs” coming from. If it’s a Fatal MVA every news agency reports it and every news Chock knows about. So, they are basically saying that they missed 59% of Accidents. They are not preventing them from happening by excessively Taxing us with illegal Tax that was not voted upon by anyone with common sense, just someone who’s money hungry and looking to line their pockets with more and more money which is used for all the BS that is wrong with this City. Since creation of Vision Zero the Stats show that it did not make a dent in fatalities and if anything kept the status quo and the year 2022 was the deadliest with 59 fatalities just beginning of the Year.,Vision%20Zero%20began%20in%202014.

  3. Ah Yid … You forgot to mention the 360’s on OP, Coney ,& every intersection . The cameras pay for themselves. Reckless driving , requires lazy cops to do some work .

  4. If this will make things safer for our children crossing the street, then I am for it.
(This is not a political issue.)
