VIGILANTE JUSTICE? Rockland Residents Threaten to “Take Care Of” Serial Burglar as Bail Reform Keeps Him Free

Outraged residents in Rockland County are demanding increased scrutiny of New York’s new bail reform laws, pointing to a local serial burglar as evidence that lawmakers must revisit the “ill-advised” reforms and empower police, prosecutors, and judges to halt criminal activities.

Residents who spoke with YWN say that a single burglar is responsible for thefts and property damage in several hundred incidents over the past year alone, with police and prosecutors’ hands tied, making them unable to do anything about it.

The suspect, who targets Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods exclusively on Shabbos and Yom Tov – when residents are not active – breaking into vehicles, including by smashing windows in, and making off with tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of valuables.

The burglar has been arrested numerous times by Ramapo and Spring Valley police, but is let out each time, with judges unable to keep him behind bars due to New York State’s bail reform laws, despite his lengthy rap sheet.

YWN reached out to Chaverim of Rockland, with the organization confirming that it is well aware of the suspect, that its Shabbos patrol members have caught the suspect in the act on numerous occasions, and that police are doing all they can – “which is essentially nothing at this point, thanks to the ill-advised bail reform laws,” a Chaverim coordinator told YWN.

Residents in Rockland County are fed up and hinted that they have plans in store for the serial burglar.

“I have numerous friends and neighbors whose vehicles have been stolen from, and many of them have additional costs to cover too, because he smashed their windows,” one Rockland County resident told YWN.

“There is real talk of residents ‘taking care of’ this burglar by themselves,” he continued. “If the police can’t help us, prosecutors can’t help us, and lawmakers refuse to help us, there’s only one group of people who can help us: us.”

“I have never before condoned or thought that vigilante justice is the right way to go about things. That’s why we have law enforcement and judges,” another resident said. “But circumstances like what we’re dealing with is exactly why the concept of vigilante justice exists.”

“If the cops can’t do it, we can,” he said. “Our neighborhoods deserve to be safe. End of story.”

  1. Catch him and handcuff him to a tree in the forest.

New Yorkers knew their governor was in favor of her predecessor’s bail reform ACT and voted her in regardless.

  2. Maybe Yidden can offer the perp a job where he can utilize his talents? Maybe, helping open accidently locked cars and houses, locksmith service. Possibly providing security advice to the residents, reviewing their weak spots? (in cyber, this is called “white hat” v. “black hat” hackers, pardon the hat pun).

  3. A big shout out and yasher koach to all those who obeyed the Teitelbaum & Twersky psak to vote for Hochel. I can’t imagine that they are affected by this. They need a Teitelbaum & Twersky bumper sticker attesting that they are on the same side and should be left alone.

  4. Thank you Satmar and New Square you are to blame…. Why don’t Rockland County residents ask them what to do since they are the cause…

  5. @AAQ

After a perpetrator pays his/her debt to society and is rehabilitated those can be options. Right now society deserves to see the perpetrator brought to justice.

  6. As unnerving as a burglar targeting frum neighborhoods may be, it is ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN FOR YIDDEN IN GOLUS TO “TAKE ACTION” BY TAKING THE LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS!!! The Maharal writes in Netzach Yisrael Chapter 24 that even if the goyim are murdering Jews ח”ו, it is absolutely forbidden to fight back against them!!

Such lawless actions are typical of the Zionist שמד movement ר”ל, and it is unfortunate that “religious” Jews are mimicking then, and are clearly poisoned by their כוחי ועוצם ידי. A Yid who “fights back” against the goyim, even those committing crimes, is עובר on the Shalosh Shevuos and according to the Satmar Rav is worse than an idol worshipper!! השם ישמור!

  7. Irrespective of the opinions of the maharal or the satmar rav, bottom line is that we must follow the laws of the land and that includes bail procedures and the legal system and any physical action taken against the accused outside of the judicial system is itself illegal and subject to the legal process where it absolutely could turn out that someone who retaliates against the alleged thief could face stiffer penalties and higher bail requirements than the thief himself which seems illogical but if it follows the legal statutes legislated by the ones we put into power then we must adhere to those laws regardless of how they are manifested in context of our demonstrably fragmented political sway.

  8. If the man has been arrested his name is public information as is his address at booking. There is no reason that the Rockland Chavarim can’t publicize his name and address. If and when he goes to trial a crowd of citizen spectators can ask the court clerk to convey to the judge why they are there.

  9. @Yossi Shtup: Go learn the Maharal again. You must not have understood what he was saying. There is a Klal, Hbah L’Horgecha, Hashkem V’Horgo. If we see Goyim Murdering Yidden CH”V, we must fight back and save ourselves. The same goes with protecting our property.

While I am not condoning Murder, a 9mm makes a great deterrent, and once the perp tastes a bit from that, he will find some other neighborhood quickly.

  10. I found out another problem and it isn’t only the Bail issue. A friend of mine had packages stolen off his porch. He had clear video footage of the theft. The thief was well known to Shomrim and Shmira and the perp was arrested. The DA called my friend and told him if he comes down to testify it becomes a felony but if he doesn’t come down to testify it is a misdemeanor and he will be let out. My friend has a job and couldn’t go down. But whats the logic in this process.

  11. Veizmir – Wow, you are such a talmid chochom!! You can quote me a halacha all by yourself!! HOORAY!! Why don’t you tell that halacha to the Satmar Rav זצ”ל, the Brisker Rov זצ”ל, Reb Elchonon Wasserman זצ”ל, Reb Boruch Ber זצ”ל, the Rebbe Rashab זצ”ל, and dozens of other Gedolei HaDor who vigorously fought the Zionists ימ”ש and their odious kefira, despite living in a period in history where the Jews were being persecuted by the Goyim much, much worse than this poor Monsey robber.

You should be ashamed of yourself Veizmir, and you have to ask the Gedolim for mechila for acting as if you are a bigger talmid chochom then they were – afra lepumei!!

  12. yossi shtup: one thing all these gedolim all had in common is that they treated all yidden with respect, perhaps you can at least try to do that. Also, the fellow who you are replying to said nothing about israel. He was talking about this particular case. Let your hatred not blind you.Please.

  13. “one thing all these gedolim all had in common is that they treated all yidden with respect”
    – ever heard the expression “Kook, Shmook”? If you haven’t, just ask Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro שליט”א.

    I rest my case

  14. Stop blaming bail reform for burglary, you nudniks.

First of all, anyone leaving valuables in a car is an irresponsible fool. Put your valuables in your home, or a vault or safe, not an unattended car on the public streets.

Second of all, if the alleged serial burglar started his crime spree a year ago, he should have been brought to trial by now, or at least should have a trial date. If he has not been brought to trial, and convicted and sentenced, he cannot be held in jail. If you want speedier trials so serial criminals can be locked up, you need more prosecutors and judges, which may mean higher taxes, which we all … love? hate? vote against?

Third of all, if you can’t take the time to testify, as Ah Yid’s friend said he could not, no one will be convicted or jailed.

  15. Shtup,

Despite your weird obsession, not everything is about Zionism. As for the Satamr Rav, zt”l, are you familiar with the term “chaptzem”? Do you know how much “vigilante justice” was done in Williamsburg over the years so that people could feel safe? Of course not, you’re just a pisher constantly playing hooky from yeshiva with too much time on his hands.

  16. Ah yid, I’m rather surprised that your friend didn’t bother with victims of crime reimbursement. I no longer live in the tri state area but most communities have funding so that working people can recoup earnings lost due to crime. These reimbursements are quite generous (at least where I live).

  17. Yossi Shtup
IT SAYS IN ויואל משה the opposite of what you wrote. please look it up. ALSO, DID YOU EVER HEAR OF “CHAPTZ EM!!!? a SATMAR PATENT, AND OY OY DOES IT WORK!

  18. Yossi Shtup
THERE IS ALSO NO SUCH MAHARAL, NOT IN CHAPTER 24, NOT ANYWHERE. YOU ABVIOUSLY NEVER EVEN LOOKED THERE OR MOSQUTED IT. IN FACT THE ויואל משה HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE MAHARAL THERE WHICE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU WROTE BUT DOES SHOW THAT THE SATMAR REBBE ZT”L HELD THE OPPOSITE OF WHAY YOU SAY.

  19. Yossi Shtup

    SO: CHAPTZ EM!

  20. @Yossi, really calm down.
I happen to be on your side about the zionists, though without your vitriol, and lets face it, you cant be that much of a follower of all those if your commenting on YWN.
But where is this Maharal you speak of? That is something I find truly astonishing.
After all, the SHulchan aruch talks about carrying sticks on shabbos to defend ourselves against Goyim who are coming to attack, so how does your statement make sense?
(besides that its nonsensical, at least in the broad way you presented it?).

  21. They should strip him naked and then let him go, running around in 20-degree weather a few times will make him think about stealing again. And they wont get prosecuted for stealing the value of his cloths isnt worth much

  22. and hatzlacha, rockland, with the chaptzems. i hope this tzorer yehudim meets the same end as the chalom cholem shelosha salei chori.

  23. To GodolHadofi and mike234:

There is a well-known expression in yeshivish: “Daas Torah is היפך from daas baale batim!” Pointing out an organization that is popular among Satmar baale batim in Williamsburg is no proof whatsoever that authentic Da’as Torah sanctions Chaptzem anymore than “frum” publications posting ads for Touro and YU is a proof of the Gedolim approving of these institutions, or that allegedly chareidi rabbis (“sellouts” would be a more appropriate title) speaking at Mizrachi events is proof of the Gedolim’s approval of their kefira ח”ו.

And as I’ve mentioned in another post, several chariedi askonim (including my former rebbe at Midrash Shmuel), the one organization that actually DOES the dirty work of the Gedolei HaDor is Neturei Karta, may Hashem grant them much הצלחה!!

  24. Yossi Shtup
I DID NOT REALISE THAT YOU CANT READ. I WROTE THAT THE SATMER REBBE ZT’L IN HIS SEFER CALLED VAYOEL MOSHE (WHICH YOU SEEM NOT TO KNOW) AND THE MAHARAL, BOTH WRITE THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. SIMPLE.

NOTHING TO DO WITH CHAPS EM (WHICH BTW IS NOT AN ORGANISATION. ITS JUST A TECHINA THAT YOU SAY OUT LOUD WHEN IN WILLIAMSBERG AND BEING ATTACKED. IT USUALLY WORKS.

YOU DONT SEEM TO KNOW MUCH ABOUT NETUREI KARTA EITHER.

  25. the Neturei Karta are a bunch of רשעים and must be harshly denounced for their open alliance with שונאי ישראל, and must be immediately placed into חרם until serious תשובה is done.

  26. Ramapo is run by a Democrat rashoes with very close ties to the governor, judges and police. While she claims to be frum, she obviously does not care enough about her own people.

  27. Shutup,

A pisher wouldn’t know that innovations like “chaptzem” to keep Williamsburg safe didn’t happen without the Rebbe’s approval.

Nobody cares what some anonymous, unnamed askonim and rabbeim have to say. On the unlikely chance that you even heard accurately, it was obviously the only thing a nasty little am haaretz like you got out of yeshiva.

  28. To mike234 & chash & Baby Squirrel:

I have no idea why you are denying a basic principle of the holy Mahara”l that can be easily accessed by anyone in a well-stocked Beis Medrash (or Google :)), but here is the text:

specifically the last few verses which stated that even if the Goyim are torturing the Jews to death ח”ו, it is forbidden to rebel against the nations.

  29. To GadolHadofi:

It’s ironic how you rely completely upon speculation that baalebatishe innovations like “chaptzem” have the haskomo of the Satmar Rebbe שלי”טא despite you not living in Williamsburg and having ZERO first hand knowledge of anything about the chaptzem system, while I provide you first hand proof about the Gedolim’s approval of Neturei Karta שיחי’ and you get all apoplectic and use ad hominem attacks.

This is an unfortunate demonstration of how your yetzer Hora for Zionism is so strong that you sing the praises of vilde chayas in Williamsburg while disparaging the true shlichim of the Gedolei Hador. Rachmono Litzlon! 🙁

  30. Shutup,

Despite your sick obsession with it, not everything is about Zionism. Please try to stay on topic even though you’ve obviously been binging alcohol and vaping pot. We’re talking about Williamsburg. I spoke with people who lived there while the Rebbe, zt”l was alive and he approved of whatever measures we’re necessary to keep his chasidim safe.

It’s unfortunate how your yetzer hara for sinas chinan and bitul zman is so strong that you destroy your soul with these vile posts. It’s not enough that you accomplished nothing in yeshiva that now you have to waste your life doing this?

  31. Truly astounding the level of vitriol here. Honestly embarrassing.
And if you guys dont like what one commenter says (just like me), that takes away the issur of ona’as devarim?
ANd forget issur, just plain childish bickering. Have we lost all class?
