Gingrich Tells ABC News: ‘I’m Going To Be The Nominee’

A very confident New Gingrich asserted to ABC News Thursday afternoon that he will be the Republican presidential nominee.

“I’m going to be the nominee,” the former Speaker told ABC News. “It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee.”

The bold assertion came after Gingrich refused to criticize the Republican challengers who have begun attacking him and his record.

TAPPER: “How do you respond to Republicans who say if you don’t draw distinctions with Mitt Romney and others who are attacking you, if you don’t point out their perceived vulnerabilities, Barack Obama and the Democrats sure aren’t going to share that same reluctance and you are doing Obama a favor by staying positive?”

GINGRICH: “They are not going to be the nominee. I don’t have to go around and point out the inconsistencies of people who are not going to be the nominee. They are not going to be the nominee.”

TAPPER: “You are going to be the nominee?”

GINGRICH: “I’m going to be the nominee. It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee. And by the way I don’t object if people want to attack me, that’s their right. All I’m suggesting that it’s not going to be very effective and that people are going to get sick of it very fast. And the guys who attacked each other in the debates up to now, every single one of them have lost ground by attacking. So they should do what they and their consultants want to do. I will focus on being substantive and I will focus on Barack Obama.”

  1. Supercilious fellow.

Methinks Perry and Santorum have a shot at the vacuum that will form due to the Cain scandal.

  2. It’s very hard for Newt Gingrich to look at recent polls and not see that he will be the nominee. For the rest of us, it’s very hard to look at recent polls and wonder who the nominee will be, considering how abruptly Messrs./Ms. Bachmann, Perry, Cain and all the other previous favorites have flamed out. This difference in ability to interpret the facts of course represents just one of Mr. Gingrich’s personal deficiencies – in this case, his inability to understand anything unfaborable about himself. Given the fluctuations in recent polls, his candidacy is about as plausible as mine would be, if I were a candidate (which I am not).

  3. Newt Gingrich is the most intelligent and knowledgeable candidate currently running for President. A Gingrich – Bachmann ticket would beat the Obummer in a landslide and would mark the beginning of the recovery for our nation.

The American people are tired of the Obummers BS. All talk little or no action.

The best scenario for a strong recovery is: Principled Republican leadership in the White House, Republicans controlling the House of Reps and the Senate controlled by Democrats. This combination would lead to great but cautious legislation.

  4. The democrats really deserve to be kick out HARD on their behinds. Their behavior during the past 3 years of this administration has been abominable. The Republicans have always been willing to work with the dems, but the dems were not willing to work with the Republicans at all. For that, they deserve to be kicked out completely.

#6, why do you think having a dem controlled senate would help a recovery? The dems don’t want to work with sensible people at all. They won’t cooperate.
