Kerry: Budget Impasse A Challenge For US Diplomacy

Secretary of State John Kerry says the greatest challenge to U.S. foreign policy is not emerging China or Middle East instability. It’s Congress.

In a speech Wednesday at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Kerry cited the adage that “we can’t be strong in the world unless we are strong at home.” He called the budget impasse a threat.

The State Department has said automatic spending cuts would jeopardize $2.6 billion in aid, security assistance and other international programs.

Kerry said legislators need to avoid “senseless cuts.”

Otherwise, he said his credibility as a diplomat might be damaged.

Kerry said, “Think about it: It’s hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they must resolve their economic issues if we don’t resolve our own.”

  1. He’s been a senior member of Congress for years – and he’s complaining about Congress having not enacted a budget, or even attempted at balancing federal expenses and income.

Of course, now that he’s in the executive he’s worries about his agency’s budget (as opposed to a few days ago when he was Chair of the Senate committee in charge of his agency’s budget)>

  2. #1. Except that he is exactly right on this point. Sequestration will devastate the US’s ability to defend itself militarily as well as diplomatically. It will effect national infrastructure, from safety, to flow of goods, to air traffic. On your next trip to Israel (or anywhere else) it might take you twice as long to get through security, assuming your flight takes off at all.

The SecDef has already told one of the two Carrier Battle Groups not to deploy to the Mediterranean (and our “friends” there know that). He’s also cancelled all military equipment maintenance for the second half of Fiscal 2013. That means any plane, ship, or tank which needs repair will go to depot and stay there until further notice. And our “friends” know that too.

This is a very serious impending disaster. People will die, R”L, if sequestration is allowed to take place.
