HaGaon HaRav Yehoshua Yeshaya Neuwirth ZT”L was niftar this morning, 3 Tammuz 5773, in Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim at 6:30am. The niftar, who was born in Germany, was 85 at the time of his petira.
The niftar, a known Torah scholar and rosh yeshiva, was best known for his sefer Shmiras Shabbos Kehilchasa, first published in 1965. Many view this monumental work as the most relied upon sefer for Halachos of Shabbos since the Mishne Berurah was published.
Being a talmid muvhak of HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach ZT”L, the first editions of the sefer were based primarily on the Gadol Hador’s piskei Halacha. However, the latest edition contains hundreds of new rulings, addressing many more modern day realities vis-à-vis Shabbos.
The levaya will begin at 11:30am in Bayit Vegan, traveling from Yeshivas Chochmas Shlomo to Har HaZeisim.
