Is There a Hashgacha on Restaurant Sukkas in Eretz Yisrael?

sukkahMany many visitors to Eretz Yisrael, and local residents for that matter, eat out on Sukkos. In fact, it has become a growing trend for Americans to prepay for a meal and eat out on the second day of Yomtov, first day chol hamoed in Israel, for there are now restaurants that accommodate such an arrangement.

Have you ever wondered if anyone gives a hashgacha on the sukka? Does the hashgacha on the restaurant or hotel cover the kashrus of the sukka too?

Read the Jerusalem Kosher News article for a look into the situation.

  1. Even assuming for argument sake that there was some shaiylah about the schach or some technicality regarding the construction of the succah, it would certainly not have any affect on the kashruth of any food eaten in that “succah”. If a yid is really machmir on only eating inside a kosher succah for all of yom tov, than he/she should probably eat at home or at the succhah at his/her shul or beis medrash rather than relying upon a commercial establishment whose mashgiach may be an expert on bishul akum but probably not on hilchos succhos.
