Astorino Wins GOP Nomination For New York Governor

astorinoWestchester County Executive Rob Astorino has secured the Republican nomination for New York governor, promising a vigorous challenge to Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Astorino won his party’s nod Thursday at the GOP convention, which was held on his home turf in Westchester. He faced no competition for the nomination.

Republican Chairman Ed Cox says Astorino’s ability to win re-election in the Democratic county shows he can compete in the blue state of New York.

Astorino accepted the nomination with a speech that aggressively criticized the governor for not doing enough to boost the state’s economy. He vowed that if elected he would take on government corruption, reduce taxes and repeal the new gun control law backed by Cuomo.

Democrats will hold their nominating convention next week on Long Island.

  1. The governor does not have the power to reduce taxes or to repeal gun control legislation, both of which require action by the legislature, and very little to take on corruption, where the primary responsibility falls to local District Attorneys.

I’d be more impressed were he to address some of the reasons why taxes have to be so high in the first place, like the fact that his county has 48 school districts, many of them small and inefficient.
