NY State Police Issued 11,198 Tickets During Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

nyspnFrom November 26 through November 30, 2014, the New York State Police issued 11,198 tickets during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend traffic enforcement.

During the campaign, the New York State Police supplemented regular patrols statewide focusing on speed enforcement, impaired driving, underage drinking, and distracted driving.

The effort incorporated fixed sobriety checkpoints, an underage drinker initiative and the “Operation Hang Up” initiative, which targets distracted drivers by utilizing Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) patrol vehicles to better locate drivers talking or texting on hand held devices. These unmarked vehicles blend in with every day traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated.

Troopers also were on the look-out for those not properly buckled up or violating the “Move Over Law.” Below is a sampling of the total tickets that were issued.

Speed 4,237

Distracted 565

DWI 172

Move Over Law 138

Total tickets issued 11,198

  1. The State Police are mostly on highways and they generally ignore those going less than 10 mph over the limit. There are enough drivers far exceeding the highway speed limitsfor the entire force to easily issue the 4237 tickets throught the entire state.
