Saudi Arabia: No Evidence Its Agents Assisted 9/11 Attacks

911Attorneys for Saudi Arabia say a judge should reject claims by families of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks that new evidence shows agents of the kingdom “directly and knowingly” helped the hijackers.

The lawyers filed papers in Manhattan federal court Friday. They said there is no evidence Saudi Arabia supported or caused the attacks.

They also urged the judge considering the merits of the civil lawsuit to disregard claims by al-Qaida member Zacharias Moussaoui. They called his comments to plaintiffs’ lawyers “colorful but immaterial hearsay statements” from a convicted, mentally ill terrorist.

Moussaoui says it was a lie that Saudi Arabia cut ties with al-Qaida in 1994.

Lawyers for 9/11 families cited Moussaoui’s claims in saying they’ve unearthed “compelling” evidence that the Saudi government assisted the hijackers.

  1. Al Queda has been trying to overthrow the Saudi government since well before 2001. If one holds that a country is liable for acts of its citizens, then, for example, Israel could be held liable for acts by Palestinian terrorists (many of whom hold Israeli passports). That Saudi Arabia took responsibility for dependents of terrorists doesn’t prove anything since the Saudis runa welfare for state for all their citizens, including wives and children of criminals and terrorists.

The lawyers in question are trying to be enough of a nuisance that the Saudis will pay them off.
