Israel: Court Releases Protesters Over Police Objections


jail3Three demonstrators detained on Tuesday, 5 Menachem Av at a demonstration on Begin Boulevard in Jerusalem in protest of the planned destruction of homes in Beit El were released from remand the following day.

The police initially requested a five-day remand extension. However after the judge accepted Honenu attorney David HaLevi’s opinion that there was not sufficient evidence that the detainees had carried out the acts attributed to them to keep them in remand, the police agreed to their release to house arrest until motzei Shabbos Tisha B’Av. The detainees will be allowed to go to shul and continue studies. Three additional demonstrators detained on were released the same day at the police station.

Honenu attorney David HaLevi, who represented the three detainees kept in remand, stated that, “This was a completely superfluous detention. The court ruled that the evidence was weak and released my clients. The decision speaks for itself.”
