New Helmet Law Makes Half-Helmets Obsolete for Motorcycle Drivers in Israel

As of Thursday, no longer will motorcycle drivers be allowed to wear half-helmets in Israel. A new by-law was signed by the Minister of Transportation and Intelligence, Yisrael Katz, that states that all drivers of motorcycles and scooters must wear full helmets.

The new law is aimed at raising the level of safety for drivers of two-wheel vehicles across the country. The half-helmets only covered and protected the upper part of the skull. This has proven to be ineffective at protecting the drivers from head injuries should they be involved in an accident or slip while driving.

According to the new law, the driver’s head must be completely covered down to and including the ears. Thus, the smaller helmets are now being made unfit for driving purposes in Israel.

The new law comes just one week after Minister Katz passed a similar law requiring all riders of electric bicycles to wear a helmet no matter what age they are or where they are driving.
