Rav Shteinman Shlita Opposes a Second Term for Rav Amar

amarOn Monday, 26 Iyar 5773, HaGaon HaRav Simcha HaKohen Kook Shlita and HaGaon HaRav Avraham Sherman Shlita visited the Bnei Brak home of HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita. The rabbonim provided details surrounding the deal in the works between Shas and Bayit Yehudi to permit HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita to serve a second term and clear the way for HaGaon HaRav Yaakov Ariel Shlita to run for the slot of Ashkenazi chief rabbi.

The Gadol Hador reportedly listened to the rabbonim, and after hearing what they had to say he expressed adamant opposition to the deal.

Kikar Shabbat adds that it has learned that the rav added that “Everything possible should be done to prevent Rav Amar from serving a second term.”

  1. HMMMMM…so who would Harav hagaon support for Sefardic Chief Rabbi? or does he believe there should be only ONE chief Rabbi or perhaps NONE AT ALL?

  2. I really doubt that Rav shteinman is opposed to Rav Amar. I think he is opposed to any deals with Bayit Hayehudi.

  3. #1 perhaps I’m wrong, but your tone indicates disrespect for one of the Gedolei Hador, perhaps silence is appropriate in some instances.

  4. Not necessarily this thread but why do charedim care who will be chief rabbi if they don’t care or listen to him?

  5. #6 -That is precisely my question! Chareidim don’t eat rabbanut kashrus, and when the chief rabbis called on the kehilla to light their Lag B’Omer bonfires on Sunday night so as to prevent chilul shabbos (by the seculars), the chareidim ignored them even though: a) there is no halacha to light a bonfire (how high? for how long?); and b) the chilonim saw them disregard what the chief rabbis say and now they believe they also have a right to disrespect the rabbis.

  6. All kehillos are concerned who will be Chief Rabbi. From the Rabbinate office, the positions of dayanim, city Rabbonim, Kashrus supervisors and almost all ‘klei kodesh’ jobs originate. With Shmittah year not far away, decisions of the Chief Rabbinate play a role in import, exports and home-grown produce.

  7. #6-
If it were a just a matter of kashrus you would have a good question, but the chief rabbis can also determine policies which affect the future make up of klal Yisroel, like gerus, gittin, and mamzerim. Remember the controversy around Rav Goren.

Really? Really? are you really that much of a sonei yisrael that the whole part of dan lekaf zechut is basically tossed out the window? You are the problem of am Yisrael.
Only YOU could know what this persons intentions were on a computer! You know what they meant and how they meant it.
Wow for a bunch of “frum” people you are quick to jump down someone’s throat!

  9. I find all this backroom dealing to be disgraceful and really reflects poorly on Rav Yosef and the other rabbonim who are acting like a bunch of Chicago political hacks in a city council election. No one speaks of the qualities of any of these rabbonim, their lamdus, their leadership role and most importantly, their managerial skills to handle the administration of the various functions assigned to the chief rav. Instead, it all comes down to money, power and ego. Maybe its time to have these positions appointed by some non-partisan group of religious and secular leaders make these appointments and get these bickering rabbonim with vested and parochial interests out of the process entirely.

  10. to #12:

I would be more likely to dan #1 lekaf zechus if she hadn’t opened her comment with sarcasm– “HMMMMM…so” which didn’t look like an innocent question.

Regarding your comment- “Wow for a bunch of “frum” people”– why are you attacking a group of people for one person’s comment? Where is your ahavas yisroel?
