The 21st Knesset: More Chareidim and Fewer Women

As the final results in the election for 21st Knesset appear to have been tabulated, the picture is one of a Knesset with more chareidim; sixteen representatives as compared to thirteen in the outgoing Knesset, as well as fewer women.

Twenty-nine women were elected to the new Knesset, most from the two largest parties – Likud and Blue and White – each with ten women in their lineup. The chareidi lists do not include women of course. There are thirty-six women in the outgoing Knesset. It is important to point out that only 29 were elected to the incoming Knesset, the remainder moved into position with the resignation of MKs, reports Dr. Ofer King of the Israel Democratic Institute.

Among the MKs elected, 42 are Sephardi, more than one-third of the 120 MKs. Among them, 15 are from Likud and 9 from Blue and White. Most of the Labor party MKs are Sephardim, 4 of 6. In Kulanu, most are Sephardim too, 3 of 4. All the Shas MKs are sephardim, and the only parties without any sephardim on the lists are Yahadut Hatorah and Meretz.

A quarter of the MKs are residents of the periphery: Eight are members of Blue and White and eight in Likud. In each of the Arab parties, Hadash-Ta’al and Ra’am – Balad, there are three residents of the periphery. There are two residents of the periphery in each of the following parties; Shas, Labor, United Right-Wing, and Kulanu, totaling 30 MKs.

  1. “The chareidi lists do not include women of course.” And YWN simply HAD to call our attention to this — of course…..

  2. American,

agreed – sounds like a copy/paste headline from the Left…

On the same note, who would have thought that one day Charedim/Yehadut/Agudah will have more than Merach/Labor…
