The rabbi was granted permission to leave the borders of Israel from September 25, 2019 until October 6, 2019 after he forfeited a large sum of money as bond as well as promising upon his return, he would stand trial in a civil case, which is set to begin in November. The court’s permission was required as there was an order issued against the rabbi prohibiting him from leaving Israel.

Two years ago, a $3 million civil suit was filed against the rabbi, with plaintiffs seeking restitution for attacks the rabbi admitted to as part of a plea bargain agreement between the rabbi and the court in a criminal case against him.

Chareidim10 News reports that a separate kloiz was set up in Uman for the rabbi and his group of chassidim for Rosh Hashanah davening so the rabbi does not join the main kloiz used by the general public.

Rabbi Berland was released from house arrest just before Rosh Hashana a year ago, the result of a conviction for assault. Berland pleaded guilty to his actions against multiple victims. he had first fled Israel and traveled from country to country, thus avoiding extradition to Israel, where a warrant for his arrest had been issued. He spent time in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Morocco, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Johannesburg before being arrested and extradited to Israel where he faced the law.

His followers claim that Berland willingly took upon himself this disgrace, suffering, and exile, “which spiritually protects the Jewish People from heavenly decrees of annihilation”. It should be noted that audio footage was released where Berland was talking to his attorney about the details of one of his assaults.

Despite the charges and the guilty plea, he continues to be a celebrity-rabbi, as thousands of people flock to him.

  1. If anyone wants to jump in and defend him, remember that he’s on camera talking to a young man saying “כשאנסתי אותה” when talking about another mans wife.

  2. netzhachamah – Answer: Who cares? Lock ’em all up and throw away the key … and a Happy New Year & well over the Fast to the rest of Klal Yisroel!
