President Trump predicted Wednesday that dramatic developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict were imminent, telling ABC News to expect “an amazing two days ahead” as American forces completed a naval blockade of Iranian ports and a second round of peace talks appeared increasingly likely.
“I think you’re going to be watching an amazing two days ahead,” Trump said. “I really do.”
Trump also told ABC News he was not considering extending the current two-week ceasefire, which is set to expire April 22, saying an extension was likely unnecessary given the expected pace of diplomatic progress.
“It could end either way, but I think a deal is preferable because then they can rebuild,” he said. “They really do have a different regime now. No matter what, we took out the radicals. They’re gone, no longer with us.”
His comments came as U.S. Central Command announced Wednesday that the naval blockade on Iranian ports had been “fully implemented” within 36 hours of its launch, with American forces achieving what CENTCOM head Gen. Brad Cooper described as “maritime superiority” in the Middle East. The military said it had completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea.
On the diplomatic front, Trump also revealed he had written a personal letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping asking him not to supply Iran with weapons — and that Xi had written back assuring him China was not doing so. “I wrote him a letter asking him not to do that, and he wrote me a letter saying that, essentially, he’s not doing that,” Trump told Fox Business Network in an interview taped Tuesday.
Trump said he did not expect the Iran war or shifting dynamics in Venezuela to complicate his planned meeting with Xi next month. “He’s somebody that needs oil. We don’t,” Trump said.
“If I weren’t president, the world would be torn to pieces,” Trump added.
