Planned Elimination of Nasrallah Failed

nasrallah.jpgAddressing a Tel Aviv event, former IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Dan Halutz announced that during the 2006 Second Lebanon War, Israel attempted to eliminate Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah, but was unsuccessful. The former commander’s remarks were aired by Galei Tzahal (Army Radio).

Seeking to save face, the disgraced former military commander warned Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu not to alienate Israel’s main ally, the United States, adding that following the Second Lebanon War, Hizbullah has not dared to attack Israel, seeking to portray a modicum of success.

Halutz was compelled to step down following the war, blamed for the military failure and loss of life. Also compelled to step down was Amir Peretz, the defense minister during the war. The two were blamed for the many shortcomings of the IDF, lack of preparedness, poor planning and logistical operations. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert evaded mounting pressure to step down as well despite a growing grassroots call for his resignation.
