Religious Freedom in Jerusalem’s Old City

A father and daughter, who went onto Hay HaBayis on Wednesday morning, the day of the young lady’s chasnah, were taken into custody for davening. After members of the Muslim Waqf observed their lips moving, he made the assumption they were davening, contrary to Waqf regulations banning any prayer other than Islamic, ordering their arrest. Police complied.

While there may be controversy surrounding if one may go onto Har HaBayis, even following mikve and adhering to the appropriate halacha, one must question and Israeli policy permitting police to arrest Jews for davening and eliciting the ire of the Islamic Waqf Authority.
