Attorney General Supports High Court Petition Against Chinuch Atzmai & Shas Schools

Chareidi politicians are shocked and angered over the position of State Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, who told the High Court of Justice he sides with those opposing Jerusalem City Hall funding for Jerusalem Chinuch Atzmai Schools, the daily HaMevaser reports.

The attorney general’s position lends significant legitimacy to the petition filed with the High Court by attorney Amnon DaHartuk, who has a record of opposition regarding the chareidi community. In his petition, DaHartuk opposes the decision to provide full funding for Chinuch Atzmai and Mayan HaChinuch [Shas-affiliated] schools in Yerushalayim.

The funding is the result of Jerusalem City Hall reviewing the criteria and schools involved, with the council approving the move, but DaHartuk is determined to cut the funding nonetheless. The funding was made possible as a result of the efforts of MK R’ Moshe Gafne, chair of the Knesset Finance Committee, resulting in the Local Municipalities Law.

Chareidi MKs and politicians are fuming, and hopeful the High Court will reject the petition, which appears on the court’s calendar this Thursday.
