I got The Shmorg 4 today and on the packaging it says “Oorah’s News Bulletin March 2012, Issue #79. Published Monthly By Oorah…”
A friend of mine told me that the reason it says that is because technically you can’t use bulk, not-for-profit mail rates for raffle mailings so they advertise it as a “monthly bulletin”. This way, they can send their elaborate marketing shtick for cheaper. He said that it is actually cheaper for them to send stuff more often in order for it to be considered a monthly newsletter.
I thought this was very interesting since I know that many people complain that Oorah spends too much money on advertising when it is actually cheaper the way they do it.

It is illegal to send raffle tickets through the USPS regardless of what rate class you are using. Oorah sends numerous mailings throughout the year and apparently someone there figured out that it is cheaper to use periodical rates than non-profit rates.

But I’m pretty sure they do save by sending monthly. I heard they are located next to a regional mailing facility or something and sending directly from there somehow gets better rates then a stam post office as well.

This has been going on for as long as I can remember. Have you ever seen the fine print that says “suggested donation” on charity mailings or “no purchase required” on other contests?

Oorah sounds like a very Ehrliche organization that does everything Kosher. I think the point in this thread is to show that their monthly mailings are not a waste of money. There is nothing wrong with a legally run auction and nothing wrong with putting it in their monthly mailings.
