I think that all teachers do not refrain from giving opinion as fact. It is the best teacher who allows for students to have their belief without question. Education presents multiple sides of an argument. Such as with the aforementioned abortion. It is not normal but it is allowable by federal law. Abortion is considered through a thoughtful process between a woman and her doctor and whomever else she thinks to consult, her husband or religious leader. It is not normal just legal for now.

Many other religious believers have issue with the act of abortion, not the law…

Education stretches the mind, helps to see there are more than one option and if someone calls that brainwashing, then they are not getting different perspectives, just one RIGHT one.. The one of the person, institution or belief.

Growing up with a parent who is inconsistent or possibly having their own stress, mental illness is hard. None of that condones violence. Washing a child’s mouth out with soap is legally excessive corporal punishment and not allowed under the law. Your mother may know the law but she is not abiding by it.

There is so much free help out there. If there are younger children in the home, you owe it to them to reach out and get help for your mother, father, and self.

There are many organizations even in small communities that offer help. The directory or phone book will list child related services or maybe a trusting adult can talk to your mom.

As you say, your mother is a helper. There are many wounded helpers out there who need to heal themselves too. She may be open to help if she is aware of it. Calling in the authorities may jeopardize her job. Sharing a family secret is a big deal and ofcourse chilul Hashem. if you are willing to talk to an on line community, please find someone in real life that you can talk to .

If you are really opposed to coming in on Sunday, take the day off without pay. No one is forcing you to go but to get paid, you have to go. Working before a long week holiday is not unreasonable. Ask anyone who has to work or use vacation time or take the holidays without pay or someone looking for work. The Grass is not always greener. Go to work happily or plan to be off the day before the holiday. That is not looked at kindly where I work.

Actually, there is a lot of misinformation about children being removed from homes for child abuse. Though aproudbyg is describing multiple forms of abuse, the police or authorities do not want to remove children and cannot without exhausting all options first. Unless, there is immediate danger, the authorities would have to go to court. These is threat of harm but it sounds like your mother may need some supportive services to help her with the stress and learn new ways to parent. I am sure what she is doing does not feel good for her either.

If you are in NY, Ohel have preventive services that are free and voluntary. it will not appear on your mother’s record and you can receive the family help.

aproudbyg I think you need to invest in yourself and your children and go and see if you can talk to someone. They can help you find and outlet. Doing volunteer work can give you a place to go and meet other people. Your studies are another place. Speak to the intern if you feel safe. Take care of you. Surviving a parent who is inconsistent is hard and you cannot guess what will happen next so do not try. realize you are not at fault.

rebdoniel- I am sorry that you have taken that position on psychology. It is a social science that can be tested. There are models of practice and therapies that are evidence based and their success can be judged by research and statistics. Advise giving is for friends, relative, maybe your Rav. Like a Doctor, who can diagnosis and treat an ailment, a social worker, psychologist and psychiatrist can do the same in the same way a doctor does. They are licensed professionals. There are many tests that have variables such as a blood test.

It is the prevalent attitude that mental health professionals give advise that deters many from using them. There are may unlicensed professionals calling themselves Mental Health workers, check credentials like you do your other professionals.

Just ask the families and first Responders who are depending on crisis workers and their clergy to help them through the trauma of the last few days. They are not getting advise but trained professionals who can assist them and their families.

What i think Iced is saying is that Jews are wealthy and therefore those who pay more taxes, like Streisand and Spielberg or Eisner or subsidize those who are more religious and use the social service system to subsidize their family while they learn, even though those rich assimilated jews may not be recognized as jews because they are not frum or keep shabbos or identify as reform. they are not good enough to be jews but their money is good enough to subsidize them through taxes

Does anyone use medicaid, food stamps, medicare, Section 8, Child Health Plus or Family Health programs. HEAP.. Romney Ryan will kiss those goodbye. Do you receive or need student loans to study or go to seminary, low cost housing loans… All gone with Romney Ryan. I cannot afford to support others in may family so they can learn. Maybe you can do so? think carefully before you pull that lever.

It may have nothing to do with Jewishness. Secret Service or police or protective agents will not tell you who their “Clients” are. They clearly needed the person in the restroom alone so that there is no interference. It is protective. Someone could pass them information, a weapon or attack the person. the restroom was treated like protected area.

celebrities in manhattan will not answer the question of WHO ARE YOU. If you dont know who it is, maybe you do not need to know. its that simple. Its all in the name of their work.

There are many parks in the area with the same view. There are alternative places to date. The restaurant has a right to make money, charge a cover charge. Targeting “gym rats” or a pattern of those who do not order or using terms as “top hats” and “strings is discriminating. But going to a restaurant and not ordering or ordering water is not appropriate either.

It shines badly on all jews. There are many jewish customers who use the restaurant and it is a disgrace that over and over, the frum get categorized and are represented to mean ALL JEWS. This behavior at the River Cafe is just not acceptable.

I would disagree that the house cleaners and help are being paid a living wage. most are paid below minimum wage and asked to do things that no one else will do. They are paid off the books and take the job because it is the work they can get. I do not see it so well compared to other job.

I find the term Goy as bad as the terms I was called growing up in a town that had very few jews. There are terms that are just not acceptable and THE GOY is one of them, goyters is just worse. i do find it funny at all or clever.

you are absolutely correct. The law speaks to social service workers but in the NYC DOE who used to relegate all reporting to a social worker or guidance counselor, they also have to report. It expands the responsibility of reporting and does not allow these mandated reporter to give the information to a social worker. If a principal hears the information, they also have to report.

Neighbors are not mandated reports though teachers are. The list of mandated reporters and the social service law can be located on the NYS website at the Office of Children and Family Service website. NYS is attempting to add clergy to the list, they are currently not included but other school staff are mandated reporters.

I also wish Morah the best, calling the SCR and prompting an investigation is a hard thing to do when you are not used to it.

The definition of child abuse and neglect are clear under the Social Service Law and Family Court Act. Lack of Supervision, leaving your children alone is under part of the Social Service Law and Family Court Act. ACS can only investigate the law. There is a state criteria for safe and leaving children alone or with inadequate caretakers are not safe situations. If leaving the child alone was a misunderstanding then it should be a situation that should be resolved in the investigation period, Watch for a indicated report letter that will have long lasting effects.

the law allows for hitting your child but you cannot use excessive corporal punishment, the law does not dictate how old a babysitter has to be but the person has to be mature, capable and an adequate caretaker,…

An indicated child welfare case is a serious matter. It effects any work with children. If any organization tries to clear someone with an indicated report, they cannot. There are ways to get the cases expunged and clear the records.

Leaving children alone is a serious matter, especially if the police took the child.

As for MorahRach, ACS will only come to talk to you if you leave your name and address or they are talking randomly to neighbors which they are obligated to do. They will not get legal action to talk to a collateral. They have to get a warrant to talk to someone who was reported.

Nixmary Brown would still be alive if they got a warrant and didnt try keeping back at different times.

As for the law, Xstacy was a child with her parents in a hotel and the hotel clerk heard her abuse and they called DSS upstate and DSS did not call the case in or take action. The child died. This has been a law for over 5 years, The Sandusky case will change mandated reporting laws across the country.

Child abuse is serious and needs to be taken seriously,

there is a law in NYState called Xstacy’s law that obligates mandated reporters to report second hand information. and to report child abuse and maltreatment for investigation when they suspect abuse even if they are off the clock. This would mandate MorahRach to report the family. There really is no reason to wait. A call can be made by anyone who knows the name or address of the individuals that you cite. This situation seems extreme and needs intervention.

There are real problems in this family and the lack of calling in reports is as serious. Mandated reports can be sued, placed in ‘jail or fined if they knew and did not report. If something serious happens, possible death or serious injury to a child and MorahRach knew, MorahRach is liable. it is rarely used but in these fragile times of Penn State and DA Hynes, I would not take any risk..

a family member or someone can report for you. I understand your fear but my fear for the children are greater. If something serious happens, you will always know you could have acted.

Neither organization or any other except ACS have the legal responsibility to investigate child abuse. These organizations named have no legal responsibility to respond. You can call the State Register and not leave your name. ACS, as clumsy as they may be. will investigate. They will ask the family to a conference and meet with family members including any individuals they want to bring to the conference as part of the investigation. They will provide services and help the family. In extreme cases of abuse, they will refer the case to court. Removal of children is the last resort and if the children or even one cannot or does not want to remain at home, a friend or relative will be asked first. Children are no longer lost to the system, ACS does not just remove children without oversight or court order.

they will try to help the family so that children are not abused physically. Verbal abuse is hard to prove and the family will need to accept services.

Ohel has a preventive service unit that is free and can help the family but the family must sign up for the service.

It is the right thing to do to try to intervene and help. Child abuse will scar children for life. Trauma from child abuse or witness even if it is hearing the abuse is detrimental to children.

Please do something even if it is calling the police during an attack or Albany at the Register. You can call without leaving your name and you will remain nameless, just act please. In the name of those children please act.

There are also Targets in the east coast that have separate Kosher dairy cases. Though the choice is limited, it has been a lifesaver to get something to eat off the highway when I have not had my own in the car. They also sell fruit so you can get a quick bite if you are stuck or traveling in an area without a lot of kosher choices in a pinch

There are many companies that have clothes made by children and participate in child labor practices. Others companies where money is laundered and hire undocumented personnel to work in the factory and do not pay even minimum wage. We all make individual choices.

Target also sells clothing that promotes sports teams, they sell pink for breast cancer clothes. Target may support causes that you support also.

Some CEO force their employees to break the law in the name of profit and some companies support causes that may not be your politics.

You have a choice how to spend your money and what to support, including where we give donations or where our stocks are.
