PBA – So IYHO is that the only thing that makes a girl great?
HealthParticipantAYC – I’m asking what does it mean to the posters, when they hear this term.
HealthParticipanti love coffe -“What’s the difference between being allergic and getting infected? Doesn’t being allergic to nickel make the area infected?”
An allergy to something that touches your skin can cause “contact dermatitis”. An infection is caused by micro-organisms invading the area. This can be viruses, bacteria, fungi or other organisms. So no, an allergy to nickle doesn’t make the area infected. And it is possible to have one on top of the other. This is usually called a secondary bacterial infection. But it can work the other way around, eg.- the area is infected and you put on an antibiotic cream/ointment – you can have an allergic reaction to the stuff that is supposed to make the infection better. A medical professional with a trained eye can usually tell the difference. If the professional is in doubt, they can do a gram stain and/or a culture and sensitivity to look for bacteria.
Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, whether topical or oral. Allergic Dermatitis is treated with antihistamines, astringents (Eg. Domeboro solution) and steroids(either oral or topical).
This is why I said to go see you PCP for diagnosis and treatment.
HealthParticipantAbelleh -“In Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik’s zt”l “The Emergence of Ethical Man,” he discusses this issue briefly. He concludes from a Torah perspective, eating meat is an immoral act,”
You must be misquoting him because I never heard such a Naarishe thing before. This can only be true with Chulin, if at all. The whole idea by Kodshim was that you could it the meat in those Korbonos that didn’t have to be totally burnt. That’s why by Chulin there was originally a problem because eating was supposed to be limited to Kodshim!
HealthParticipantA Bochur should never go to college full time. Either YU, Ner Israel or Flatbush Touro @ nite – where you learn in a Yeshiva during the day!
HealthParticipanti love coffe -“Health- How would it be treated differently?”
Allergies/dermatitis are treated differently than infections.
Go get a diagnosis!
HealthParticipantSupermommy – How do you know it’s an infection -Did the PCP look at it? Or do you self-prescribe and decided it needs Bactroban and just tell the PCP to give it to you over the phone?
HealthParticipant“I’ve been stuck in the NY area for over 20 -25 years.”
Parts of NJ and Conn. are considered part of the NYC area, just as Monsey/Shvunsey is, as well as other areas in NY State!
HealthParticipantI’ve posted where I live a zillion times. Did your forgetfulness happen because you’re a Kallah or you’ve always had it?
HealthParticipant80 -Oh, I thought you were telling her she could do those things instead of being seen by her PCP.
HealthParticipantTake the bus. Check the Darkeinu web site for times. And to all the CR posters, don’t forget to come visit. 😉
HealthParticipantThe main thing is -it supports the Yeshiva which is a bigger Mitzva than just giving some band Parnossa! But I still think you need to hire a band, at least a one-man band. They only come, I think, for a short time.
HealthParticipantI don’t have any complaints about Einstein, except that he wasn’t frum. Science is always changing. His theories were based on the realities of his days. If those realities have become different -doesn’t make him into an idiot.
HealthParticipantMod -80 -Sorry, this time I agree with yungerman1. Really I would agree with you if it was a clear cut infection. But she needs to be seen because I’m not sure what’s going on. It could be something like a nickle allergy which would be treated differently.
HealthParticipantPBA – Efshar if you donate a kidney and then they take it out and find it too fatty to use, maybe you can fry it up. I’m sure you can come up with some Heter like you did with Starbucks coffee!
HealthParticipantnitpicker – Now why would you think that? A regular Dentist will take out two usually at a time because you have to remove either the top or bottom corresponding tooth. An oral surgeon will remove them all in one shot if you want. The only times they do one at a time is either if you’re a chicken or if the teeth are growing in at different times. (They aren’t at the same stage.)
HealthParticipantI posted this 5 months ago under the topic of Eensy Weensy Spider:
“Health –
There are cheap compression stockings that work. The frum stores or ladies in their houses only sell the most expensive. But I’ve found in K-mart and online cheaper and they work fine.”
HealthParticipantFeif Un -“When I said much easier, I meant that it takes less of it to OD. Your body can handle more of the other stuff than it can of the Tylenol.”
Totally wrong! The body can handle upto 4000 mg a day of Acetaminophen. Now take a weak Narc like codeine, the body can only handle about 240 mg per day. What you mean is that the way the Pharm companies combine the Narc with the Acetaminophen, you can easily max out on the acetaminophen before you max out on the Narc. For some reason the way they make these pills even though the Narc usually has sliding doses, they always put a lot of Non-narc even with the lower dose Narc pills.
HealthParticipantmiritchka -You can ask the mods to give you my email. I give permission to give it to you.
HealthParticipantFeif un -“As for the pain killers, acetaminophen can kill you if you OD on it much easier than the other stuff.”
Much easier is not true. It can kill you, just like Narcs, whenever you OD on either. See my post above!
“Health: if you’re still bleeding, you should never take Advil, because it is a blood thinner. You should only take Tylenol.”
Sorry, you are confusing side effects with precautions and contraindications. These terms are self-explantory. I looked it up -just to be sure. With Aspirin it’s a contraindication. With NSAIDs, such as Advil/Motrin, an active GI Bleed and/or a clotting disorder is only a precaution. And anyway, neither teeth extraction or kidney stone fall into these two. If it was any bleeding the book would say so. So there isn’t even a precaution. Like I posted above, I first learned of Advil 600 -800 mg for teeth/mouth problems from my Dentist. I highly recommend this for acute pain – for short term!
HealthParticipantravshalom – I figured that’s what you meant. I just wanted to clarify it for everyone else.
HealthParticipantCA – Don’t complain. I’ve been stuck in the NY area for over 20 -25 years. Doesn’t mean I like it here. Do you realize we are in Golus? This isn’t supposed to be ideal! Yaacov Avinu wasn’t happy going to Mitzrayim either. Try to make the best of it, until Moshiach comes.
HealthParticipantMod -80 – What I’m simply saying is that they decided to have vaccines for Hep B because in general it’s cost effective. Whether if the whole world was Frum Jews and then maybe it wouldn’t be. But right now that there is a vaccine, why shouldn’t Frum Jews take advantage, even if they don’t have insurance and have to pay a few bucks, for that peace of mind?!?!
HealthParticipantMod-80 and PBA –
To inform you Hep B is a major health concern, not only in the US, but all over the world. The cost benefit ratio to vaccinate very much outweighs any reason not to; considering the cost of the disease itself!
HealthParticipantPBA -Don’t confuse the issue. Most people who get Hep B aren’t getting it from transfusions. I was just talking about Frum Jews.
HealthParticipantmiritchka -“health: after reading all the above responses, would you still have doubts about the donation if the infection didnt affect your friend? (i’m not lessening the importance or hurt you feel about your friends untimely passing, just want to hear an objective opinion)”
To inform you -I am a medical professional, in spite of what some posters here have said about me. You can take my opinion as a prof. or as anon. poster -it’s up to you. We in the medical profession don’t formulate opinions from one case.
I have some serious doubts on which is safer. If I were you, I’d discuss this with a Rov who is knowledgable in medicine before proceeding. You can mention to him my doubts and let him ask top Nephrologists their opinion.
HealthParticipantPBA – Well thank you for your opinion. I now know that money is much more important than your health. But most of us don’t even want a 1 in a million chance to come down with such a devastating disease, esp. since there is a very easy way to prevent it!
September 22, 2011 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm in reply to: I hope no one has ever experienced these, but if you did, maybe you can help #813761HealthParticipantOoh Ooh Ooh -(rt. hand raised) -I’ve also had conjunctivitis several times!
HealthParticipantPBA – I knew you were going to say that. But the truth is noone knows if and when they will need a transfusion. So why take the chance of getting Hep B because of a 1 in a million chance of having an allergic reaction? If you’re that concerned make sure your doc has meds on hand to deal with this. Also, you can get Hep B in other ways. If s/o with Hep B bleeds on a public area and they just wipe it down with a tissue, no disinfectant. And then comes along s/o else who has let’s say cracked fingers because of the cold and touches the same area a week later, that person can get infected.
I have no problem with s/o who is informed & decides not to get Hep B Vac., as opposed to most of the other childhood disease shots. The key is as long as they are informed and not based on info that some anon. poster decided is the best thing to do!
I also might be anon., but it isn’t my statistics that I’m posting!
HealthParticipantmobico -You got it. That’s exactly the hype I used to buy into. Like I said above, these statistics are based on overall pts. But it seems that there is a big discrepancy between dialysis centers. Some are good and some aren’t – at what they do. So I’m questioning these statistics that say transplants are better for pts.
HealthParticipantPBA -“What percentage of people suffer severe side effects from the Hepatitis B vaccine?
What percentage of people who are not vaccinated, in the US, and do not engage in risk factors, get Hep B from blood transfusions?”
I did the research -I doubt I’ll answer these type of questions again. The only reason I did it this time is because lots of people will listen to you and not vaccinate. I’m trying to counter that.
The CDC says about 1 in a million suffer from a severe side effect from the Hep B shot, usually an allergic reaction.
The Red Cross says the following, which they got from two sources:
“The risk of hepatitis B infection through blood transfusion is between 1 in 200,000 and 1 in 500,000.”
You do the math!
HealthParticipantNurse – Was the anti-chicken pox vaccine your idea or did you get it from s/o else?
HealthParticipantNot to be taken as personal advice, but I have my doubts about kidney donation from the recipients standpoint. I really wonder if a transplant is safer than dialysis. If it’s not, it’s definitely not a Mitzva to donate. The reason I started not believing in transplants so much is because a friend of mine died from infection after having one. Tons of immunosuppressives are given to these pts. It might be easier for the patient to live with the transplant, but usually the Halacha goes after which prolongs life the longest. I used to believe the hype that it was the transplant as being safer, but I recently (18 months ago) spoke to s/o who works in a dialysis center and said some of these pts. can last forever on it. And not all centers are created equal. Find one where they have pts. coming for 25 years or so. Also with the latest study coming out today that 3 times a week dialysis might not be enough, if s/o now gets dialysis every other day or will get it like this -this makes dialysis safer than ever! Something to think about!
HealthParticipantPBA -“Oh, I thought Hep B needed real blood to blood contact. I guess medical professionals out to get it.
I still don’t think regular Americans should be getting the Hep A or B vaccine.”
Oh and regular Americans don’t ever get transfusions. I already posted that they can’t guarantee the blood supply is a 100% safe, mostly, not 100%!
“I have the Hep A because I traveled, but have not gotten the Hep B, and do not intend to.”
Oh and only in EY do people contract Hep A – noone in the US ever gets it, so there is no chance of coming down with it!
“I generally think we are being overvaccinated, and too quickly. There is absolutely no reason any vaccine needs to be given in the delivery room. There are risks to vaccines.”
The reason medical professionals try to bundle them, even if this maybe isn’t the very best way is because of the patient’s attitude. You try getting pts. to come in for shots when they are supposed to. People come in months later and say they were busy or forgot or a myriad of excuses. Sometimes they come in so late you have to start the series again. Bundling them is the easiest way to get as much compliance as possible!
“People die from them all the time.”
This statement is very far from the truth! While people have died from vaccines, this occurence is very uncommon! It’s much more likely a person will die from the disease that the vaccine is protecting against!
HealthParticipantThe Nurse- PBA says “Health: Now look which side is ignorant of basic medical facts.”
After the next comment I’m starting to agree with him:
“There are some vaccines (like the varicella [chicken pox] vaccine) that I don’t see the real necessity for.”
Didn’t you ever learn in school about Varicella complications?
Edited
HealthParticipantPBA -“Hepatitis A is not common enough in America to need it.
Hepatitis B is not common among our community, for good reason.”
Acc. to the CDC there were 2,000 cases of Hep A in 2009. About half were hospitalized and 10 died. It might not be common, but there’s a chance you can bump into one these people, esp. in our community where we have a lot of Israeli tourists. Why risk your life even if the disease isn’t common, when there is an easy way to prevent it?
As far as Hep B, Frum people sometimes need transfusions. Even though they have gotten much better at screening blood, they can’t guarantee it 100%. Why not get a shot and never have to worry about this devastating disease?
HealthParticipantPBA – You mean the type of mentality that Health-Nuts have?
HealthParticipantPBA – If enough people don’t vaccinate it affects the herd immunity. I explained this in detail in previous posts about outbreaks. In simple terms they don’t make the vaccines 100% effective because that would make them much more expensive. What they do is make them about 80 -90% effective (or less) and the rest of the percentage they rely on the herd immunity. So if s/o who isn’t vaccinated gets the disease, they can start an outbreak even amongst the vaccinated group. This has happened in a camp in the mountains recently a couple of years ago. A Frum Bocher went to England -over there he was exposed to either measles or mumps and came back to camp and started an epidemic. He came down with the disease even though he was vaccinated, but I think the person he contracted it from – wasn’t!
September 20, 2011 3:58 am at 3:58 am in reply to: Chasidim rioting against Beit Shemesh girl's school #811103HealthParticipantAnd I read that they have the cops protecting the Modern Jews. Also why take a school and put girls in there, when you were supposed to put boys? You know these people don’t consider the way you dress Tzinius. So stop pretending that you’re just a bunch of innocent victims. It’s like the people who read the signs in Meah Shearim and don’t care and walk in anyway not Tzinusdik. I personally don’t condone the rock throwing or other violent behavior, but there is nothing wrong with them yelling and screaming. This is called making a Machoh -on the way you people dress!
HealthParticipantgolden mom -Unfortunately our liberal gov. allows exceptions to the rules. That’s how they get them into school without the vaccinations! I think they claim a religious exemption. They get some Health-Nut Rabbi to sign it’s against their religion.
HealthParticipantZachKessin -You sound very informed. Did you get all this from your dad or are you in the medical field?
I used to get into the arguments here about vaccines, but now I’ve decided to sit this one out. I wonder if it’s the same people just using different screen names or are there quite a few health-nuts out there? I’ve found that the tatics they use are similar to missionaries. They are always looking to con another one. Trying to influence them with the truth is a waste of time, they are too self-absorbed with their own views! Like I once saw a Lubav getting into it with Jews for J in the subway station. They are so brainwashed for this -he was the one who ended up being flustered.
September 19, 2011 7:15 am at 7:15 am in reply to: REPLY TO mdd ABOUT CALLING GIRLS BY 1ST NAME #810734HealthParticipanttherealmgama -Explain me how it’s not extreme -when you quit your job because s/o else didn’t keep a Chumra? Get it Someone Else!
HealthParticipantThe Goq – The problem is e/o lives in their own little dream world. Read From Time Immemorial to learn the truth. It wasn’t the arabs who created the situation there is now, it was the British. The Trans-jordan was meant for the so-called Palestinians and the rest for the Jews. As a matter of fact, France was in control of Syria and Lebanon. So our good friends the French and British gave Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, respectively, to the arabs. So our European friends who love Jews so much gave the Arabs three states. Did this make them happy? No, of course not. The only solution the arabs want is the Final Solution that the Germans in WWII created. The more we delude ourselves that peace will be achieved by giving them more and more land -the more we are sacrificing lives of our brothers. They are only using the political process to gain as much as they can away from the Jews, which they weren’t able to get during all their wars! Once they whittle down as much as they can, they will try to get the rest with war. Israel should never concede a drop of land and they should totally control Gaza and the West Bank. So to the OP, there already is a 3 state solution, but that will never be enough for them. We must defend what we have until Moshiach comes!
HealthParticipantSmick – The Gemorah in Yevamos Daf 117a talks about this type of hatred:
“And R. Judah? – Because one can well understand why a mother-in-law should hate her daughter-in-law, since the former believes that the latter squanders her Savings, but why should a daughter-in-law hate her mother-in-law! Similarly one may well understand why a husband’s daughter hates her father’s wife, since the former believes that she is squandering her mother’s savings, but why should a father’s wife hate her husband’s daughter!
[this is the true explanation]: Why does a daughter-in-law hate her mother-in-law? Because the latter reports to her son all that she does. [Similarly]
So you see the Gemmorah brings a good reason why a MIL hates her DIL, because she will eventually, if not now, squander all her and her husbands’ hard earned money! Now acc. to R. Yehudah, the DIL hates the MIL because she snitches on her. Well the solution to this is don’t do things behind your husband’s back and there won’t be anything that she can snitch on. But the main thing is acc. to the Rabbonim, just because she hates you, even though there is a tendency to hate back, you don’t have to. If you break this cycle and not hate her back, eventually she will start liking you (Kmayim Ponim El Ponim)! And this is the way of our Torah!
September 18, 2011 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm in reply to: REPLY TO mdd ABOUT CALLING GIRLS BY 1ST NAME #810719HealthParticipanttherealmgama -“it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that he and other male workers address her only by her official name”
“Rav Falk is very clear, and careful to specify when he is writing a halacha, and when he is writing a recommendation.”
“You, mdd, replied that it is not assur and her reaction was extreme.”
Noone has pointed this out yet – but not only don’t you refute mdd’s claim, you actually help prove it. I’m sure you read what you wrote before you posted it. R. Falk strongly recommends that your relative shouldn’t have been called by her first name. Granted, they did something wrong. You yourself admit that R. Falk doesn’t hold this is Ossur! So she quit her job because s/o else didn’t keep a Chumra. Even if they called her a nickname which he says is Ossur, all she had to do is say my name is Chaya, not Chayala. I most definitely agree with mdd’s post that her reaction was very extreme!
HealthParticipantbombmaniac -“but thats because we dont eat the entire day because were busy…wait for it…WORKING!!!”
Not where I live!
HealthParticipantBaalHabooze – It might be a Chumra to not go in to get food during the Shmorg, but it’s definitely not Ossur. The same thing when I go into these pizza shops that have men seating and women/family seating. If there isn’t space on the men side, I take a table on the other side.
HealthParticipantshmoel -“If I understand correctly, Halacha states (as we pasken) that a man can give a get for any reason.”
Where did you get the above from? Absolutely not! It’s not a Hefker Velt!
AC -“I stand to be corrected but I think the Gemoroh says that even if a wife mistakenly burns her husbands meal while cooking, he has grounds for divorce….”
Ok, since you’re standing I’ll correct you. While it does say that, s/o explains Pshat like this- What happened here? If she burnt both hers’ and her husbands’, so she doesn’t care about herself and him. In this case, there aren’t any grounds for divorce. If she burnt a meal meant for him and then takes it for herself and then makes another one for him, she’s a Tzaddeikes! The case were he’s allowed to divorce is like this -She made a meal either for herself or for both of them and then it burnt. She then makes another one for herself and gives him the burnt one!
HealthParticipantravshalom – True, they aren’t the same thing. And the pharmacist has no legal right to switch.
When I had major dental work the Dentist didn’t give Narcs. You don’t need them and Vicodin shouldn’t be prescribed in these situations. They tell you to take 3 or 4 Advil every 4 -6 hours. I’m against e/o being prescribed Oxycodone or Hydrocodone for every single pain that they have. Google Percoset & Vicodin about overdose and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
” overdosing on either Tylenol w/ Codeine or Vicodin is more dangerous because of the Tylenol than the other ingredient (both of which are narcotics).”
Your trivia is off. Adding the acetaminophen to any drug increases chances of overdose because people don’t realize that their narcotic product contains acetaminophen and then they take a product like Tylenol together with it. To say Tylenol is more dangerous than Narcs is also not too accurate. Acetaminophen will kill the liver, but Narcs will make you stop breathing. Both are very dangerous drugs. This is why I said these drugs shouldn’t be given for regular pain like teeth extractions!
HealthParticipantSam2 -Well your posts are semantics because I’d say most don’t believe. There are more Frei than Frum Jews. And amongst the Frum, how many actually believe they will moving out of this country and it could even tomorrow? R. Nosson Wactfogel Zt’l- they say used to have a suitcase packed, just in case he came and he had to leave right away. The Chofetz Chaim -they say had a bare amount of furniture because he was only a traveller here. He was travelling to EY with Moshiach and then to Olam Haba. They say there is nothing wrong with healthy doubt, but I think a lot of us have more than that!
