ubiquitin – What about responding to “bais yakov maidel” isn’t she also a med/pre-med student?
HealthParticipantubiquitin -“FFG that is nonsesne. Could you please provide an example of how the uderlying principle behind synthesizing a Grignard reagent (or any of your examples) is even a little (let alone “pretty”) important in medicine.
Health’s assesmsnt is entierly correct.”
THANKS!
HealthParticipantNechomah -“Heath, I’m not really sure what you’re protesting to much about. This cream was given to me by a doctor here in EY also and with all the testimony above, I think this issue should be put to rest. Sivadene cream is definitely used for treatment of burns.”
Dear Nechomah,
The issue wasn’t whether Silvadene is used for burns,
but whether you should use Bacitracin or Silvadene for burns.
From my post previously:
“Silvadene is an antibiotic; nothing to do with Pain relief!
Use Bacitracin, it’s OTC and it’s cheaper than Silvadene.”
HealthParticipantnotasheep -“And if the burn is bad enough that you need to put a proper dressing on it, then you should be going to A+E as soon as possible anyway.”
Going to where? A+E? Minor burns do need a proper dressing on them, but don’t always need care in an emergency room.

HealthParticipantrebyidd23 -“Even if it’s a placebo, if it works, what’s wrong with it?”
I actually appreciate your question.
To answer: 1. It’s expensive; compared to Bacitracin. 2. It needs a prescription; compared to Bacitracin.
HealthParticipantDaasYochid -“Health, why would someone appreciate advice which they think is wrong or even dangerous?”
They are entitled to their opinion, but so am I. They have the right to think whatever they want about me, but why do they keep
repeating it, esp. in the same topic?
HealthParticipantheretohelp -“I think we can take that as a no.”
Take it anyway you want.
HealthParticipantnotasheep -“vashtischwartz, many people do not have gauze in their house, the next best thing is a plastic shopping bag – they have tiny holes in that let the wound breathe. Believe me, I did first aid and the paramedic specifically said to put a plastic bag on it.”
That’s fine; but as soon as you can, buy a proper dressing for it.
HealthParticipantoomis -“Logic dictates that if I have a burn and put Silvadene on it and the burn INSTANTLY stops hurting, and the same does NOT hold true for putting ‘white vaseline” on it, that it is not a placebo effect. It is the Silvadene. And the fact that the doctor himself prescribed it (and I quote)”to eliminate the pain and infection potential,” tends to give more weight to his opinion than someone else’s.”
Your and your Doc’s opinion don’t have more weight than the company. If there was a reason to say it proivdes pain relief, the company would advertise that!
HealthParticipantbais yakov maidel -“health, are you a medical doctor?”
I don’t answer private questions!
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma -“but you aren’t a medical professional.”
This last line just cracked me up! All these years I offer my medical advice for Chessed, in spite of people like you – who never had/have a drop of appreciation!
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma -“You are the ‘someone on the internet’, the ‘many people’ are actually educated humans that I know in real life.”
Yes, e/o should believe you when you say “the ‘many people’ are actually educated humans that I know in real life”, but noone should believe me when I say – I’m a medical professional!
Logic at it’s finest.
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma -“The rule is check with your doctor before you let someone on the internet tell you that something many people deem unsafe is really a good idea”
Since when are a few bloggers on YWN considered “many people”?
HealthParticipantbais yakov maidel -“Health, testing IQ is a secondary reason for making ppl take those courses. The main reason is because you need to know that stuff to understand the first thing about modern medicine. Please tell me you were joking when you said it’s solely to test IQ. Besides, there were would be many shorter and less expernsive ways to test IQ more directly than make someone take 3 years worth of prerequisites and the mcat”
No joking around. The only things that I’ve found helpful in college is A & P, 1 & 2, Microbiology, possibly Statistics, and knowing how to use a computer, nothing else!
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma -“you might want to check with a doctor before applying bacitracin to a burn, ointments and gels are not recommended as they can exacerbate the burn.”
There are exceptions for every rule!
HealthParticipantlawnmoer -“Hanging your own shingle without at least a few solid years of experience learning the “practice” of law (which is not taught in law schools) is usually a bad idea. Thinking that you can just open up your own firm and that you will have clients and have any clue what you are doing is just one more misconception that people thinking about going to law school have.”
Maybe that’s your misconception! Here in Lakewood, many people do just that and they make a fine income.
“Unless your father-in-law has a large legal practice with lots of paying clients, in which case why wouldn’t you just stay in Kollel…”
I actually know s/o like that. Another misconception of yours.
The FIL doesn’t want to support him forever, but is willing to pay
for him to go to Law school.
HealthParticipantbais yakov maidel -“Health, are you serious? You don’t think knowing this is necessary for the practice of medicine? So what do YOU think one should know to go to medical school?”
I know that it isn’t important! The reason they have the requirements is because it’s a measurement of your IQ!
HealthParticipantoomis -“I guess we have to agree to disagree. In my personal experience with Silvadene, I have found it to be extremely excellent as an anesthetic for the burn pain.”
“I guess we have to agree to disagree.”
Not really. Your disagreement has to be based on logic.
The only way Silvadene gives any pain relief is because it’s a cream (i.e. white Vaseline) and/or the placebo effect!
HealthParticipantrebyidd23 -“Ointments should wait a week or so.”
Bacitracin ointment can be put on right away!
HealthParticipant2scents -“Is anyone familiar with the ‘potato thing’? there are some people that put raw potato on a burn site, they claim that it heals rapidly.
There is a ‘burn lady’ in monsey that assists people with it.
Anyone heard about this?”
I wouldn’t try any of these old wives tales (Bubby tales) because
they aren’t Sterile!
HealthParticipantvashtischwartz -“notasheep, don’t use plastic, the wound needs to breathe.
If it’s a serious burn, you need to protect the site with sterile gauze.”
There are special, sterile bandages that won’t stick to wounds!
Example – ADAPTIC Non-Adherent Dressings
HealthParticipantoomis – “Not a placebo effect, Health. I have over my six decades burned my hand on many a stupid occasion, and other so-called burn ointments did zip (and certain types of ointments can make the burn worse). Stuff like Solarcaine, etc. never really helped except for a minute or so. Silvadene was the only effective treatment we have ever used, and it TOTALLY stopped the pain.”
Sorry, a least Solarcaine has an anesthetic in it, while Silvadene does’t! I posted this above -“Use Bacitracin, it’s OTC and it’s cheaper than Silvadene.”
HealthParticipantheretohelp -“To go to medical/dental school you need to have taken calculus, biology, chemistry, physics and organic chemistry, so if those aren’t covered in your BTL, you need to get them elsewhere.”
That’s why noone knows how to practice medicine. What do you need this for -“calculus, chemistry (maybe?), physics and organic chemistry”?
HealthParticipantlawnmoer -Read what I wrote before – a lot of Yeshiva guys only want the degree and then they open up their own pratices.
HealthParticipantoomis -“Sorry, Health, with all respect to your “health field” connection, the doctor SPECIFICALLY told us to use the silvadene (thank you for the spelling correction,DY) to relieve the PAIN of the burn, as well as for its antibiotic sulfa properties. And relieve the pain (nearly instantly) it absolutely did.”
I stand by my previous statement!
From Drugs.com: “Each gram of Silvadene Cream 1% contains 10 mg of micronized silver sulfadiazine. The cream vehicle consists of white petrolatum, stearyl alcohol, isopropyl myristate, sorbitan monooleate, polyoxyl 40 stearate, propylene glycol, and water, with methylparaben 0.3% as a preservative. Silvadene Cream 1% (silver sulfadiazine) spreads easily and can be washed off readily with water.”
The only way Silvadene gives any pain relief is because it’s a cream (i.e. white Vaseline) and/or the placebo effect!
HealthParticipantjbaldy22 -“unfortunately the same is true with many yeshiva guys who go to law school off of BTLs (the not passing part)”
My friend went that way. He isn’t a genius, but he has a brain in his head. He now works for himself in Lakewood.
HealthParticipantoomis -“If you have Sylvadine (sp?) cream, available only by prescription, that will more ro less instantly stop the pain, depending on the severity of the burn.”
Silvadene is an antibiotic; nothing to do with Pain relief!
Use Bacitracin, it’s OTC and it’s cheaper than Silvadene.
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma -“I’ve learned in first aid certification courses NEVER to put very cold or ice water on a burn because it, too, can damage the skin.”
Yes, it can.
“It is imperative (per the information I received) to soak in lukewarm/tepid water to keep the skin temp down but not further exacerbate the damage.”
You can use cold water also, but not for a long time.
HealthParticipantakuperma -“Health: Actually, a Medical/Dental school could admit someone without an undergraduate degree, and in fact many have programs leading to combined BS-MD degrees.”
You must be lawyer. The facts are many Yeshiva guys take their BTL’s and go to law school. Don’t waste your time applying to
Medical/Dental w/o an under grad degree, because even if you can get in – you won’t be able to Pass!
HealthParticipantMr Sfardi – “Medical/Dental school requires a btl also”
What r u talking about? Those schools require real under grad degrees!
HealthParticipantROB – “To all posters: You all act as if halacha and tradition started when you came of age and it did not exist beforehand. The subject of this thread was the “kula-ization’ of judaism, to which I responded that it has become the “chumra-itazation” of yiddishkeit.”
I’ve posted this previously – that I find many in our generation that “Chopp” up the “Kulous” -i.e. keep the “Toful”, but forget
about the “Ikkar”!
HealthParticipantDaasYochid -“does not apply where the chacham is permitted to use his judgement”
What does this mean?
HealthParticipantgolfer -“Health, you don’t own a copy of Emunah U’Bitachon? You should really get yourself one.”
Are you sponsoring a copy for me?
HealthParticipantDY – I answered you, but it got deleted.
I’ll repeat from before –
???? ???? ???? ?????”
“????? ???? ???? ??????
HealthParticipantDY -“You should really take a look at what the Chazon Ish says about that. Emunah Ubitachon 3: 30.”
I don’t have one. But if it’s a general concept – then I agree.
I was talking about specific cases that they put their Negius first!
February 4, 2014 3:30 am at 3:30 am in reply to: Do people who are uglier have more yiras shomayim? #1002067HealthParticipantUgly people have more YS because they constantly question Hashem -Why me? Why me?
The more you talk to Hashem, the closer you become to him!
HealthParticipantDY -“Health, be very careful with that. Depending on whom you refer to, you could be guilty of being mal’ig all divrei chachomim.”
I was talking about some Poskim nowadays. Do you think the Torah when it says –
????? ???? ???? ?????? “
was only talking about Moshe Rabbenu times?
HealthParticipantI think the biggest fear is that Poskim are Noigeh Bdovor. Many times they can’t come to the truth!
HealthParticipantDY -“Not eating toloim is not a chumrah. Closing your eyes to the fact that there are toloim doesn’t make them muttar.”
While I personally would use one of the the methods mentioned above, I don’t think you’re being Dan ROB L’caf Zechus.
ROB holds that you don’t need to be Bodek because it’s Eino Motzay.
HealthParticipantLost1970 – I’ve done both. First, I was abused by my parents and then I was abused by my wife. And now, after the nursing home, I’m living at my parents’ house and being abused here!
HealthParticipantFrom the Star-K website:
“Strawberries
Checking Instructions
Please note the following regarding all Star-K insect checking instructions: When applicable, guidelines apply to produce grown and purchased in the United States. Checking procedures in other countries may be different.
Fresh:
Fill basin with water and mild soap or special veggie wash (such as Tsunami 100).
Note: When using soap, use only a food grade cleanser that meets all federal, state, and local regulations. The water should have enough soap to make it feel slippery.
Soak strawberries while agitating the water.
Rinse strawberries under a stream of water.
It is preferable to cut off the top together with a small amount of the flesh.
Strawberries may now be used.”
HealthParticipantHey PBA,
The last time we spoke in the CR you were a Bachur and now you have a teen, what gives?
HealthParticipantAvram in MD and HaKatan – Thanks!
HealthParticipantSam – I fail to see where HaKatan said that the holocaust wasn’t the will of Hashem!
HealthParticipantSyag Lchochma – “Welcome back Health, hope you are recovering!”
Thanks!
“It is absolutely true that the cancerous body can shut down and stop processing intake even with working kidneys, but it is not a given, and each patient has to be assessed.”
True. A lot of times the body stops working & it isn’t just in cancer. But we don’t know beforehand, until we try. To not try, you have to ask a Shaila first.
“But I have been told explicitly that a DNR can only be signed after speaking to a rav, it is not always permissible to “let someone go”.”
This is true. Also, you need to ask a Shaila before you withhold
any treatment and/or medication.
“That being said, I would absolutely give dialysis since the reverse means allowing poisons to accumulate.”
Again, a Shaila needs to be asked beforehand. It is possible that a Rov would allow you to withhold dialysis and/or any other treatment!
HealthParticipanttakahmamash – “So you’re saying it’s OK to take an unconscious elderly woman, dying of pancreatic cancer, and put her on dialysis against her express wishes?”
Not at all. Situations like these require a Rabbi’s guidance. If the Rov says you can leave her alone, then fine. But it is also possible he might tell the family to do whatever they can to prolong her life!
HealthParticipantThanks to all!
OOmis -Bezras Hashem Bekorov.
HealthParticipantinterjection -“There are good hospices and bad hospices. It breaks my heart that something that was created so people could pass on in comfort is being abused.”
A person needs to ask a Shaila before using a Hospice!
HealthParticipanttakahmamash – “Both of my parents died recently; my father at the end of 2012 and my mother in the fall last year. My father, among other things, had congestive heart failure. My mother had pancreatic cancer. Each of them had a signed DNR (Do Not Resuscitate order), which they had prepared many years before they each became ill. My father was about to enter a hospice service, but he died before my sister could get him enrolled. My mother was on a hospice service for the two weeks before she died.”
A DNR is usually Ok, but Not hospice. Did you ask a Shaila beforehand?
“After she was on hospice, she had no further fluid intake by mouth (she was in a coma) or by IV. Both the doctor and her hospice nurse explained to us that her body was shutting down; any attempt to give her fluids of any sort would simply end up drowning her internally.”
Sorry, No such thing! If the kidneys are working, and if even they are Not, you can give them dialysis!
HealthParticipantGetting better hopefully – IY’H.
