000646 -“1.) You are wrong about HIV. It had been in the USA at least 7 to 10 years and probably closer to 30 years before it was recognized in the early 80s (first probable case was in the 50s and there was what was later definitively recognized as cases by the late 60s early 70s)”
I didn’t argue about that! My point was in the 80’s, when the disease was still containable, they Didn’t even try because it wasn’t PC!
“2.) My point is that to be effective the quarantine would also have to cover people who had contact with people who may have traveled to West Africa and this is not practical. I elaborated in my posts above.”
Again you’re Not being real! All countries have passports & visas. If the US would clamp down about West Africa, a lot countries would follow!
HealthParticipantCharlie -“Actually you can’t fly from any of the three countries that have been affected by this epidemic (Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone) to the US. There are no flights.”
I know that Charlie! That’s why I wrote “Just stop any arrival, even indirectly from West Africa.” Do you know what “Indirectly” means?
HealthParticipantdi amar I -“shake grape juice so that there are tonz of bubbles and then drink it. that should work”
And my mother just told me that grape juice kept her up the other nite!
HealthParticipantlamud vov tzadik -“Anyone know the name of some good sleeping tablets besides meletonin which happenes not to be a sleeping tablet but it works properly”
Funny; I just dealt with a No sleeping prob. Go to a sleep clinic – they take insurance.
HealthParticipantARWSF -“What traumatized me as a child was an experience of falling on the stairs of an escalator while it was moving. although it was only a fright. no injury.”
I ran up a down-escalator on a date. It was fun.
“and living through a ride through a car wash. that was terrifying.”
Sounds like fun to me!
HealthParticipantLior -“What have you against kids?”
Nothing! Ya see – I have also & the combination of mine & hers would be too much money!!!
HealthParticipantarwsf -I’m available; but you have too many kids!
HealthParticipant000646 – By 1984 they could have tested anyone who could have had the disease. Anyone with Aids should have been quarantined! There was only a few thousand people that needed to be tested at that time. But it wasn’t PC!
3) Wrong again. E/o has passports, anyone with the origins of West Africa shouldn’t be allowed. You didn’t read what I wrote before: “Many countries will follow”!
HealthParticipant00646 – Do you work for the Gov.? If not, why are you passing on their Shekers?
In 1983 they discovered the cause: 1) & 2) This is from Wikipedia, usually I don’t quote from them but this Info is correct: “AIDS was first clinically observed in 1981 in the United States.[83] The initial cases were a cluster of injection drug users and gay men with no known cause of impaired immunity who showed symptoms of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), a rare opportunistic infection that was known to occur in people with very compromised immune systems.[84] Soon thereafter, additional gay men developed a previously rare skin cancer called Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS).[85][86] Many more cases of PCP and KS emerged, alerting U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a CDC task force was formed to monitor the outbreak.[87]
By September 1982 the CDC started using the name AIDS.[94]
OriginsBoth HIV-1 and HIV-2 are believed to have originated in non-human primates in West-central Africa and to have transferred to humans (a process known as zoonosis) in the early 20th century.[98][99]
HIV-1 appears to have originated in southern Cameroon through the evolution of SIV(cpz), a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) that infects wild chimpanzees (HIV-1 descends from the SIV(cpz) endemic in the chimpanzee subspecies Pan troglodytes troglodytes).
the African green monkey source of SIV, the sooty mangabey source of HIV-2 and the chimpanzee source of HIV-1There is evidence that humans who participate in bushmeat activities, either as hunters or as bushmeat vendors, commonly acquire SIV. However, SIV is a weak virus, and it is typically suppressed by the human immune system within weeks of infection. It is thought that several transmissions of the virus from individual to individual in quick succession are necessary to allow it enough time to mutate into HIV.”
In 1984, they had a test for it.
3) Just stop any arrival, even indirectly from West Africa. Many countries will follow!
HealthParticipant2scents -“I was wondering if there is someone that has any detailed information.”
Get a book called: “Guide to Medical Cures and Treatments by Reader’s Digest Editors.” In there they have regular medicine & alternative medicine.
HealthParticipantakuperma -“I suspect most doctors have long since concluded that most patients won’t listen if told to radically lose weight and exercise, and go to “Plan B” (medication).”
Look, do you know a relative or a friend who is obese or smokes? Tell them to stop their dangerous behavior & then come here and post their reply!
HealthParticipantAkerman -you are totally wrong. First of all, we practice medicine acc. to certain rules.
“If an “alternative” method worked, it would be adopted by mainstream medicine. The fact the “big medicine” rejects something that could use to justify charging you big fees suggests that these new treatments are to be looked at skeptically.”
Somethings even though they are “alternative” – they do work.
“Though if an alternative is “free”, the establishment tends to ignore it. For example, Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented or cured by loss of weight (to the point the person is no longer overweight) and by significant exercise. Exercise and refraining from eating do not generate fees, making this an “alternative” to establish medicine. So in cases where the alternative involves little or no expense, it might be valid even though the medical establishment doesn’t embrace it.”
This is so Not true! Of course we tell pt’s to lose weight -if they are fat. Obviously, you know nothing about medicine. The pt’s don’t listen -so the choice is let the pt die or develop a drug to help them!
HealthParticipantWolf – you’re absolutely right! I love all these armchair quarterbacks. The main thing I had is that her Rabbi abandoned her and her Frum? friends took his place. I know why we are in Golus & it ain’t the Internet!
July 23, 2014 4:44 am at 4:44 am in reply to: Kerry: U.S. will provide $47 million to help humanitarian situation in Gaza #1024498HealthParticipantSam2 -“live right: Which is why I would probably not have such a problem if the US gave military aid to the PA.”
Did it ever occur to you that there is No difference between Hamas and PLO/Fatah? Why do they need weapons? This was the mistake of Rabin & Peres!
July 22, 2014 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm in reply to: Kerry: U.S. will provide $47 million to help humanitarian situation in Gaza #1024492HealthParticipantIMHO- The Democratic Govs. of the Free world have demonstrated their “love” of Jews. Look now at Europe & Canada. The only ally we used to have was the USA. We desperately need a change of parties in this Country.
HealthParticipant147- I think you’re reading into things – the CIG has nothing to do with Davening. The CIG and coffee are part of his morning routine.
HealthParticipantYY -I agree! This is what goes on – people think it’s alright to miss Davening. The truth is Davening is part of the Sidrey Hayeshiva, whether you like it or not.
HealthParticipantHIA- I always text to EY, it’s cheaper than calling.
I use Verizon, the other side has to have texting,
almost all phones there do. It must also be a mobile phone,
just like here.
HealthParticipantsmile4life -“I am very interested in these types of experiences”
Why? I had a near-death experience, but I don’t remember it. Most people don’t. I think those that are interested in this is because they lack Emmunah.
HealthParticipantI’ve heard the war between Gog and Magog is between the US and Russia. Now who do you think I’m going for?
Hint – It’s Not the guy from Kannan!
HealthParticipantIn contrary to the title -there is nothing startling about it. As we become more Liberal – the less observant Jews become angrier. The Goyim take this as an excuse to be more Antisemitic!
HealthParticipantROB -“Health: your report is correct but that is the issue. At the time, the exmption may have been desperately needed, as it was after the Holocaust and European Jewry with its Rabbonim had been decimated. Additionally, you had a tiny percentage who were exempt.”
Thank you for admitting the truth!
“Today, you have a huge tsibbur that is exempt and a large amount of them don’t deserve the exemption. That was my point.”
First of all, the army doesn’t want or need them. Most Charedim
are truly sitting and learning and Not wasting time. This whole argument from Lapid & Bennett is based on their Philosophy that sitting and learning is a big waste of time.
Like I quoted Rav Schach zt”l -“There are two fronts in wartime -one on the front and one in the Bais Medrash.”
If they don’t believe this -there is No common ground between the two sides!
HealthParticipantROB -“Even after the founding of the medinah, many chareidim went to the army.”
I wasn’t there, but I can tell you from an article in the anti-charedi rag -“The Forward” that Ben-Gurion did exempt Bnai Torah from the draft!
HealthParticipantjewishfeminist02 -“Regardless, it still doesn’t look like a “math problem” per se…”
How about this one?
“A-a O2 Gradient = [ (FiO2) * (Atmospheric Pressure – H2O Pressure) – (PaCO2/0.8) ] – PaO2 from ABG
Normal Gradient Estimate = (Age/4) + 4″
HealthParticipantROB -“Health: Your facts are wrong. In the “milchemet hshichrur” -1948- plenty of chareidim fought in the haganah and etzel. Even after the founding of the medinah, many chareidim went to the army.”
I believe you are mistaken. Those weren’t chareidim, but Mizrachists. In those times even the Mizrachists looked chareidy!
HealthParticipantgolfer -“Come on Health, you know better than that.
When oomis suggests a little respect and understanding on both sides, the correct response is Not for you to attack the lack of respect and understanding on the part of the Other side! They’re responsible for their actions; you’re in charge of your own. That means you start by showing some respect and consideration for the other guys, however misguided you may think they are.”
You didn’t understand my point! Don’t come along and say -Lets all be friends and at the same time pass laws that will put Frum Yidden in jail. The Frum community will not stand idly by when this will happen.
HealthParticipantoomis -“And while I DO believe that learning upholds the spiritual health of Klal Yisrael, there is an Eis Milchama, and we are living through those times now.”
Yes; and it was at that time too, yet the Gedolim forbade joining the IDF!
“Both sides need to understand and respect the position of the other.”
And do Bayit Yehudi/Mizarchi/NRP understand and respect the position of the Charadi?
Like I quoted Rav Schach zt”l -“There are two fronts in wartime -one on the front and one in the Bais Medrash.”
Do they understand and respect the position of the Charadi?
I think NOT!
HealthParticipantCtrl Alt Del -“Sorry Health, you are incorrect. For the purposes of ABG interpretation normal hco3 is 22 to 24. Sometimes you can use 26. No one uses 28, ever. If they do, they are wrong too.
See: Clinical Application of Blood Gases, Shapiro, Harrison, Cane, Templin. (THE final word on all things ABG related (even the mention of “the Shapiro book” inspires awe)”
“These are references I value somewhat more than Tyler Junior College.”
I do too! I just picked them because that’s what came out on Yahoo search.
As far as what you wrote, Tyler is right and the books you quoted are wrong.
Did you ever here of a website called Lab Tests Online?
This is the site of the AACC!
Here is their reference range:
“CO2
Age Conventional Units SI Units
Adult 23-29 mEq/L 23-29 mmol/L
>60 years 23-31 mEq/L 23-31 mmol/L
>90 years 20-29 mEq/L 20-29 mmol/L
from Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics. Burtis CA, Ashwood ER, Bruns DE, eds. 5th edition, St. Louis: Elsevier Saunders; 2011.”
There is a possibilty that your book(s) developed a different
reference range than Tietz’s.
HealthParticipantyichusdik -“So, I don’t need or mean to rehash the whole “share the burden issue” in this post. I personally think service – whether in the IDF or in Sherut Leumi is a positive thing, but I think that both sides have been playing a zero sum game when a psharah would have worked better for all.”
The only ones playing this game are Lapid and Bayit Yehudy. What the Mizarchi/NRP don’t understand is that when Augdah agreed with Ben Gurion -it was not to “share the burden”, but to have a common denominator to have a country. Like I quoted Rav Schach zt”l -“There are two fronts in wartime -one on the front and one in the Bais Medrash.”
I think this Gov. will fall fast and at the next election -the Frum parties should join the leftists. Bibi anyway wants to give away the West Bank!
HealthParticipantCtrl Alt Del -“Nu? So a partially compensated resp acidosis.”
Sorry; you are wrong. I got this problem out of a book.
Answer:
“pH is too low – acidosis; PCO2 is too high, would cause acidosis or correct alkalosis; HCO3- is normal, neither causing nor correcting imbalance
high PCO2 is correllated with low pH, which is consistent with patient’s report
because PCO2 is causing the problem, this is respiratory acidosis; because bicarbonate is normal, there is no compensation
possible cause: cardiac arrest”
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“Health: Assuming I’m reading this right, that means that the pH is too low, the PCO2 is too high, and the HCO3 is on the high end of normal. I just don’t see the math problem.
Ah, you know what, I’ll just go to college first :).”
Sorry; I was just showing the problem, not asking any questions.
Here are the questions:
“Name the disorder:
Respiratory acidosis (with or without renal compensation)
Respiratory alkalosis (with or without renal compensation)
Metabolic acidosis (with or without respiratory compensation)
Metabolic alkalosis (with or without respiratory compensation)
Suggest a possible cause. For example, a cause of chronic respiratory acidosis is emphysema.”
HealthParticipantHaLeiVi -“it must be a negative statement. That is obviously the opposite intention of that Gemara, though.”
I agree that it’s not the Posheh Pshat. My Chiddush is when you do something L’shem Shomayim it could turn out bad.
The Soton meant well and it turned out bad; Penina meant well and it turned out bad. Why does the Gemmora care what the Sotton does & why? To teach you that even the Sotton acts L’shem Shomayim, but it doesn’t mean good comes out of it.
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“Health: Oh no… I can’t stand math. I’m not bad at it, but it’s definitely not my thing.”
This is an example of a medical math problem:
“Practice Problem 1:
ABG’s: pH 7.31 PCO2 55 mm Hg HCO3- 28 mEq/L
Normal values for ABG’s:
pH range 7.35 – 7.45
carbon dioxide partial pressure, 35 – 45 mm Hg
bicarbonate, 24 – 28 mEq/L”
HealthParticipantstreekgeek -“While Penina’s intentions were pure, she did cause Chana major grief. You don’t get rewarded for doing an “aveira lishma” no matter how perfect your intentions are. If you are trying to help someone, but in the process you cause damage to the person you are helping, how much of a help are you really?”
I’m surprised noone brought down the Gemorah – B’B 16a- that says both the Soton and Penina meant L’shaim Shomayim! Not a great compliment.
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“Health: I like both… so sue me :).
I actually like having multiple interests. (Subject-wise, I love science, history and writing, just to iron that out.)”
Most med prof are also good in math. A lot of math is used in medicine.
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“Health: I also want to become a doctor. I don’t necessarily have EMT as my high point as far as a career. I just feel like it’s the next step,”
Ya’see from your SN – I just assumed you had no interest in medicine. More like the literary type.
Also, FYI most medical students Don’t have any allied health professions before they go to med school.
HealthParticipant2scents -“I disagree, EMTs are the one helping the patients breath.”
With whom are you disagreeing with?
“It all starts with the ABCs, its not the meds it is the ABCs! Basic CPR or bleeding control is more important than ALS.”
Now you get what I started off with -“Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?”, I feel s/o who practices good CPR & First Aid is just as valuable, if not more, than EMS guys!” It’s Not the EMT’s, but the BLS itself.
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“Health: I’m actually CPR/first aid certified (I’m a lifeguard), but basically what jackinthebox said. I’d like to be as confident, equipped and knowledgeable as possible- I want to be just as qualified and helpful as those Hatzolah guys, not an interim measure.”
I’m not going to answer all those other comments, but yours – because I posted to you originally. After I finished EMT and then Medic school I went further in my education. From my POV, being an EMT is the bottom rung of the ladder. This isn’t to knock EMT’s – just to make you realize – the reality. Of course, EMT’s are integral part of the EMS system. Going back to my original comment of “Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?”, I feel s/o who practices good CPR & First Aid is just as valuable, if not more, than EMS guys!
HealthParticipantwritersoul -“emesvyatziv: Why? Personally I want to become an EMT- ever since I saw someone collapse in shul and we had to wait for a guy to come over to help, I’ve known that this is something important.”
Once upon a time I did volly work, not anymore.
Question of the day:
Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?
HealthParticipantstreekgeek -“At this point I just need to figure out how to decongest.
I tried: a humidifier when I sleep, putting my shower on the full blast till my bathroom was steamier than Lakewood in mid August, saline solutions… nothing is helping.”
Try a vaporizer instead of a humidifier. Also use Vick’s Vapo Rub on your chest and neck.
HealthParticipantstreekgeek -“I’ve spoken to a doctor who referred me to an ENT which I haven’t seen yet. (I absolutely hate doctors.) He said it’s probably something with my sinuses…”
Tell your PCP to give antibiotics, either – Amoxil, or Z-pak, or Biaxin. You don’t need a specialist!
“Zinc? How do I do that?”
Either Zicam oral spray or Cold-eze lozenges.
HealthParticipantPBA -“Don’t use zinc. It can cause you to lose your sense of smell permanently. (And much of your sense of taste)”
Sorry, you are behind the times. They only removed nasal zinc, like Zicam nasal spray, nothing else.
HealthParticipantPBA -“4 weeks? That is concerning. Have you seen a doctor?”
Good idea. It could be a secondary infection.
Viruses usually respond to Zinc. Also, a humidifier in your room helps.
HealthParticipantroshvrishon -“He was a talmid chochom and he baked the pizza, he insisted it was a regular piece of bread and couldn’t understand why no body was washing on it. He felt that the topping was superficial and didn’t affect the dough itself.”
Perhaps he was Talmid Chochom but didn’t know S’A. The Mecaber says Simon 168 #7 there are different ways to make a Mezonos. The second way is a Machlokes between the Mechaber & Rema on how much other stuff. But on the First way there is no Machlokes. This case is similar to Pizza. It doesn’t have to have more other stuff than the bread.
HealthParticipanttwisted -“Plain understanding of the halacha of pas haba bekisnin means that if you eat a given quantity in a given time (kedi achilas pras) it is kvius seudah. And the plain meaning of kvias seudah is reflected in any of the above scenarios.”
It works the other way around. You don’t have to be Koveah Seudah in Pas Haba Bekisnin unless it’s a min. of 3 or 4 Beyzim, nor should you.
And the trend nowadays to wash all time -is a Kula. Better to wash on a real piece of bread, than to wash on pizza.

HealthParticipantHaLeiVi -“Bacitracin is petroleum-based and I would NOT put it on a fresh burn that can still be cooled!”
Rinse burned skin with cool water until the pain stops. Rinsing will usually stop the pain in 15 to 30 minutes. After this applying Bacitracin is just fine.
HealthParticipantHaLeiVi -“I’ve been told Dr. Bulmash (BP pediatrician) has used colloidal silver on bad diaper rash.”
Way to go Max. I used to know him, before he was a Doc.
HealthParticipantHaLeiVi – My comment to DY applies to you also.
HealthParticipantDY -“Wow, you’re basically accusing the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA of perpetrating a fraud on the consumer.
I would sooner assume that Silvadene is formulated to do a better job killing the bacteria likely to be found in a burn area than is any OTC antibiotic.”
I realize from your post that you don’t know the difference between OTC & prescription! Because of this, your two sentences above are false.
HealthParticipantnotasheep -“Health, as someone who has burnt herself on numerous occasions (mostly in the kitchen), I can tell you that minor burns do not need a dressing.”
You are right. But underneath clothing it might make it more comfortable.
how ’bout that?
