squeak, I’m afraid that this thread may rival Random Questions is size, as nearly all my posts shall be worthy of nomination.

An additional reason labels are dangerous, is that it legitimizes the illegitimate. Gee, I’m “left-wing modern-orthodox” and “my gedolim” are okay with mixed swimming. Or I’m “right-wing modern orthodox” and “my gedolim” oppose mixed swimming but are okay with lax tznius. etc. (Don’t get too hooked up on the examples; its the point that is important.)

squeak, you are mistaken I believe. You did agree to a Chanuka Party, and it was NOT in a chanuka related thread.

    squeak, our posts crossed.

Indeed you may be correct that it is a communal responsibility to subsidize the non-wealthy. But how can such a mechanism be enforced? I think it cannot effectively be done so. Therefore the only alternative is to fund it vis-a-vis the wealthy parents. I see no alternative.

You have not addressed GAW’s point if a parent of 10 children after is all said and done CANNOT pay 3500 – 5000 per child. I doubt you suggest Public School.

brook, lets break this down for you, so you can understand.

Which of the following are Israeli? Your…

    Paternal Grandpa?

    Paternal Grandma?

    Maternal Grandpa?

    Maternal Grandma?

    Wolf/notpashut,

The label itself connotes a rejectionist attitude.

You asked “If someone says I’m a white american jewish new yorker flatbush guy black hatter yeshivishe litvak, did he label me or did he just say who I am?” And each of those attributes excludes — i.e. implicitly, in a subtle sense, excludes — others “not like” you. Saying you are “Jewish” is a good exclusionary attribute, the others are not.

Labels like Orthodox, Chiloni, religious, modern orthodox, etc. are divisive and destructive to Jewish unity. A Jew may keep the Torah, may keep most of the Torah, may keep part of the Torah, etc. but they all are still Jews — and only Jews. Perhaps a Jew in need of improvement, but a Jew (and only a Jew) nonetheless.

Feif, you call Touro a joke but yell bloody murder when others call YU a joke (for whatever reason) and you demand an apology. Are you going to apologize to Touro for publicly besmirching them?

Curious, sounds like your getting cold feet. Yesterday you were all hot about being the official photographer, but you are now squeakish about it all, and getting very rusty with this Greenland shtick. I would’ve expected this more from squeak, who pulled out of his promised Chanukah Party attendance. I thought better of you.

brooklyn21, please enjoy the wedding very much and spend lots and lots of time there!

But sorry about blowing your cover. You admitted to working there before anyone knew the story would hit the presses. Now the gigs all up. You’ll have to drop out of the CR like ‘dont have internet’ after her cover was blown. In the interim I think I’ll ask my sister to stake out Shaare Torah on Ocean and Church to get a photo of the 21 year old ivrit be’ivrit teacher. She can ask around providing your apt family description you’ve provided over the past 2 months, that should narrow it down to fit just one eccentric.

So Gmab guesses I’m a teen, squeek says low 30’s, and myshadow 70. Anyone else have a shot before we take the mean, medium and mode (well strike the mode; now 2 guesses are alike) and hope to get something half realistic?

squeak, you realize that Chasidish (and to a slightly lesser extent, very Yeshivish) Yeshivas charge (relatively) very little in tuition. Paying 4,000/year is considered high in those school, and only met by the wealthier parents.

charlie – she mentioned she works there BEFORE YW posted the story. She didn’t know it was coming. She mentioned she teaches ivrit b’ivrit, is 21, speaks (”sometimes”) with an Israeli/Sefardic havara, mentioned (in the ashkenaz/sefard thread amongst others) her family background. The game IS over.
