Dogs don’t have arms, so they can’t hug, and when you hug them you are either wrapping your arms around their forelegs or standing them up with their legs over your shoulders, which they tolerate but probably don’t understand. And dogs that are kissed to catch on to its meaning, but they don’t instinctively see it as an expression of affection.
