Congress overturned the Peyote decsion as it could affect Jews and christians (Like with wine).
States cannot ban Peyote anymore
zahavasdadParticipantgetting angry and insulting your fellow jew is not the proper behavior of a Ben Torah
zahavasdadParticipantPBA
The US cosntitution trumps NY law and there is a freedom of religion clause. There was a case with Peyote (A hallucenagen taken by some Indian religions for hundreds of year) that the supreme court ruled illegal and congress re-wrote the law for such uses
zahavasdadParticipantFerd,
I am not going anywhere
zahavasdadParticipantPBA
During Prohibition there was an exception for wine for religious use so wine for Kiddush or the sacraments was legal.
In fact many jews got into the wine business “for Kiddush reasons”
zahavasdadParticipantWine Under the Chuppa would probably fall under the same category as sacraments in church especially if given by the Rabbi
zahavasdadParticipantThere is criminal and then there is CIVIL penalties. Giving Alcohol to a minor and then something happens makes the supplier liable for the damage
zahavasdadParticipantThe better question would have been if DICKENS was an anti-semite.
Forget what you saw in Oliver, read the Book Oliver twist, Dickens constantly says Fagin, the jew and the pictures in the book of Fagin have a beard and a long hooked nose.
There is a 1930’s movie version of Oliver twist where Fagin has a long hooked nosed, beard, Long Black coat and Tzitith
zahavasdadParticipantI am no lawyer, but a child saying kiddush in Shul (If your shul says kiddush) is probably legal even if the parent is not there.
A priest can administer the sacraments in church which include drinking some wine, so the law is probably similar in shul.
Maybe there is, maybe there isnt for a sip of wine at kiddush legally in NY. And it probably isnt a big deal. I just choose to be safe rather than sorry and use grape juice. Its Kosher for Kiddush. and it avoids the question of “MORE”

You dont need much secular education to be a box schlepper, but if you want to be a lawyer you do.
February 6, 2013 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm in reply to: Making Sunday an official day off in Israel #927082zahavasdadParticipantActually the biggest opponents of this is the business community as they are afraid of lost profits.
zahavasdadParticipantWhen I have Bochrim for Shabbos, I treat them they way I would want others to treat my own children.
I will have no part of corruption of a minor. Call it a Chumra if you like
February 6, 2013 1:14 pm at 1:14 pm in reply to: Making Sunday an official day off in Israel #927075zahavasdadParticipantTo A charedi a day of rest means, going to shul in the morning, having a nice shabbos meal and then taking a nap
To a Chiloni, a day of rest means either going to the beach and relaxing or going to the mall and hanging out , maybe going to a cafe, Seeing a movie or soccer game.
They are going to do these things anyway on their day off. Its better for them to do it on Sunday than Shabbos. Many Gedolim in Israel are in favor of Sunday off for this reason
zahavasdadParticipantThe Middle class in Israel are paying 50% or more of their incomes in taxes and living off Overdraft, they cannot pay any more. You can only tax somone so much.
February 6, 2013 12:48 pm at 12:48 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927203zahavasdadParticipantThe idea of the welfare state is a totally recent invention. Post world war II for the most part (even in Europe). So there is no minhag at all to learn and survive on government benefits. Prior to then you had to work or starve
zahavasdadParticipantI have an android phone and they are great and cheaper
I bought them used on eBay and never had a contract
zahavasdadParticipantMy rule is such, If anyone under 21 asks me for a drink at a simcha or elsewhere I will tell them, I will not give them anything unless their parents tell me directly its ok.
If I have teenagers as guests and their parents arent at the table, I will serve ONLY grape juice even for Kiddush,
zahavasdadParticipantAn unlocked phone will work on multiple networks or overseas, but that only applies to AT&T and T-Mobile phones, since they both use SIM cards
zahavasdadParticipantLakewood is cheaper than Brooklyn and the housing needed for large families is even more expensive in Brooklyn
February 5, 2013 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm in reply to: Issue With Inconsiderate Men Davening On The Bus Every Morning #926347zahavasdadParticipantPersonally I am in favor of all the buses, minyan or no minyan, having a mechitza for the entire duration of the bus ride.
If the bus company receives any state money, this is illegal . That is why they got in trouble before
February 5, 2013 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm in reply to: Making Sunday an official day off in Israel #927069zahavasdadParticipantIn Israel there is a 6 day work week and the only day off is Shabbos, so many non-relgious spend shabbos either going to the Mall or going to the beach, the idea of a Sunday is to give these people a day to do these things.
Once you have decided to give a non-shabbos off, you have to realize most business have to more or less follow the world schedual. For example if you are a stock broker or an international trader in import/export you need to work when people are doing the same thing.
International traders work M-Fr not Su-Th or M-Th 10 hours a day.
There is very little movement in US for 4 10 hour days except in jobs like health care, its really hard to work for 10 hours, I know Ive done it many times
zahavasdadParticipantI dont know who is repsonsible if someone get Alcholic posioning
(A BAC Level over .02% can lead to alcholic posining which can lead to severe medical shock or death)
zahavasdadParticipantI belive that if you serve Alcohol to a minor and someone is hurt, YOU can be sued.
So if Alcohol is served by a yeshiva on Purim and a Bocher gets drunk and drives and hurts someone, the Yeshiva can be sued.
Also if Alcohol is served at your house and you give a minor alcohol , YOU can be sued if they drink and drive
zahavasdadParticipanteBay.
They are NOT cheap thoughm but you can get unlocked ones.
The Apple store does not sell them
zahavasdadParticipantYou cannot expect a non-relgious public to take your message when you cannot control people who (at least in their eyes) are you kin-folk.
February 4, 2013 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm in reply to: Issue With Inconsiderate Men Davening On The Bus Every Morning #926337zahavasdadParticipantWho pays for these buses, Do they receive government funding or not.
This was the issue with “back of the bus” before, the bus company had received government funding and had to pick up anyone who wanted to go.
February 4, 2013 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926166zahavasdadParticipantI am sure more than one Yeshiva is doing this, imagine if 10 yeshivas are doing this and every one of them goes down Bedford Ave (You might as well go where the money is).
I dont belive that every single one of them gets $100, If there are 10 fancy limos, thats $1000 which is alot of money even for someone on bedford Ave.
If it takes more than a few mins to get the money, it slows down the process and less homes can be visited. I guessed 3 hours for this, but if it longer, its longer and the Fancy Limo will cost more.
In best case here, with 5 hours of collecting . At the CHEAPEST rate quoted here, $100 an hour (including tip) and the most optimistic gain of $2000
that costed you $500 for a $2000 gross with a net gain of $1500 and a 25% cost to make the money.
And thats assuming you got the cheapest Limo with the most generous donors
zahavasdadParticipantIt only takes one rock throwing, Cell Phone breaker , Ramat Beth Shemesh loudmouth to ruin it for everyone.
February 3, 2013 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926158zahavasdadParticipantSo tell me how much do people give them, I bet most will give less than $5. I am sure some will give more.
Tip is 15% .
February 3, 2013 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926156zahavasdadParticipantActually I did a google search for a Limo myself in Brooklyn and I got $600 for 3 hours + tip for a 7-10 passenger vehicle. (the $500 was quoted by someone else here)
So for $690 , if every person gives $5 (most probably give less) it would take 138 people to give just to break even,
$92 an hour sounds too cheap for a streech limo in Brooklyn
February 3, 2013 12:11 pm at 12:11 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926147zahavasdadParticipantIf the Limo costs $500 and figure 3 hours, thats $1500, do they expect to cover the costs, And what if they do cover how much about the $1500 do they cover. Say they collect $2000, Is it worth $1500 in costs to raise $2000 (Net $500) , now if you say someone will donate the limo, it would be better to ask that person for a direct donation instead.
The reason you might want an event like a chinese auction that raises little profit is because it might get your organization out there to people who are not involved and that is worth something
February 3, 2013 4:38 am at 4:38 am in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927169zahavasdadParticipantDoes that 1500 Shelkels include other benefits Like Food Stamps (Whatever the Israelis call it) WIC, Section 8 Housing (again whatever its called in israel) and Kupat Cholim.
In The Us the welfare checks might be small, but food stamps, section 8, medicaid/Chip can begin to add up
February 3, 2013 4:30 am at 4:30 am in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926142zahavasdadParticipantI have seen them,
Not for profit doesnt mean they dont have expenses. Even Tomche Shabbos is not 100% for feeding the poor, They have a small office and a telephone line. and they have Volunteers, most non-profits have paid employees.
And for the record, Non-Profit doesnt mean it doesnt make money. A yeshiva that owns a popular wedding hall does have income. The OU Makes alot of money from Kashruth certification
February 3, 2013 4:18 am at 4:18 am in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926139zahavasdadParticipantWhile I find the idea tacky, collecting Tzdekah from a fancy limo I guess as there is no Booze, I guess its OK and let him go. Let him have some fun.
But Make sure there is no Booze, If that means arranging it yourself and having the limo company keep the booze away
February 3, 2013 2:04 am at 2:04 am in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926132zahavasdadParticipantYou obviously dont know anything about Tzedakahs, Nobody has 100% of tzedkah money goes to “Tzedkah directly”, Some of the money goes to things like paying Con-Ed , paying the Non-Jewish Janitor to clean the building, the Secratary who answers the phone etc. Thats where the 50% comes from.
Also many places have fund raisers and many times fund raisers are paid a percetage of the money they raised, If you have gotten any phone solitiations for Tzadakahs, it was likely by a company who is paid by how much they collect.
When you go to a Dinner, do you think 100% of the dinner goes to the Tzedkah. The food isnt free, the room rental isnt free.
Its the same here, How much of the Tzedkah is being used to pay for the Limo and I agree I do think it looks better to collect while walking or a taxi rather than an expesive Limo.
And B’H the Rosh yeshiva Banned drinking, It would not look good if a bunch of Drunk Bochers showed up in a fancy Limo
February 1, 2013 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926128zahavasdadParticipantWhat is it to you? There is no logical reason why it should make a difference to you.
If you are going to collect Tzedkah its reasonable to ask what are the overhead costs are and how much of the money you are giving is going to the Tzedkah and how much is going to overhead. (Its unreasonable to except 100% of Tzekah money to go to Tzedkah, but its also reasonable to expect at least 50% (I think thats average of charities) of funds collected to go directly)
February 1, 2013 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm in reply to: A Complaint About The Terms 'Frei' & 'Shiksa' #1049037zahavasdadParticipantFrei means “free” in German. Never understood why someone off the derech would be considered “free.” As opposed to us frum Yidden who are shackled?
There are word direct meaning and idomatic meanings, which might be different. Many words understood meaning is different than the dictionary meaning.
A simple example is a synonym for the word Happy, Nobody uses that word to mean happy, it means something else
February 1, 2013 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926125zahavasdadParticipantHow much does it cost to rent the Limo and the driver?
zahavasdadParticipantThere is a big difference between saying good shabbos and hugging and kissing.
But I agree dont do it in Borough Park, nobody will answer back even if they are the same gender as you
February 1, 2013 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927162zahavasdadParticipantIf Hashem wants to pay for Effort, That is his business and he will provide.
What if you hired a Torah Tutor for your son and he didnt teach him anything, Would you pay him for Effort?
February 1, 2013 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927160zahavasdadParticipantA 2.0 is a C. In Liberal arts courses A C is a joke, but in Math and Science its harder.
Ive been in Math classes where the highest grade on a test was a 46 (out of 100)
They do not give you an E for effort in an University. A good Effort but a D grade gets you the door and no more money
zahavasdadParticipantBe aware the many of the homeless and beggers suffer from mental illnesses
February 1, 2013 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm in reply to: Son Wants To Go Collecting In Limo On Purim #926109zahavasdadParticipantCollecting Tzedakah from a Limo?
February 1, 2013 3:36 pm at 3:36 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927157zahavasdadParticipantUniversities throw out students all the time, Its called Academic Probation, If your grade point average falls below 2.0 you have one semester to get it back out or you are gone and you Flunk out.
Grad Students are only paid because they teach classes, if they dont teach they are not paid. Sometimes they also do other jobs on campus like tutoring or office work as well
February 1, 2013 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927155zahavasdadParticipantWhen you are in a university, the grants are only for a limit period of time with a goal (usually 4-5 years) and then you are cut off. The money you get is usually towards tution, not living expenses. Kollel is open ended. They also throw you out of college if you are not able to keep up. Not everyone who starts will finish.
How often do you hear about a Rosh Yeshiva throwing out someone who just isnt cut out to learn all day (I am sure it happens, but its not frequent)
As for as research grants, There isnt just a handout, you have to submit a proposal for the grant and defend why you should get it, It can takes months or years to get them , they are not handing them out so easily. And not everyone who applies gets them, There are alot more applicants than money avaiable
zahavasdadParticipantI will have to agree that its probably easier for a BT to go OTD than an FFB and the reason is , An FFB might be disowned by his family and have to go out on their own.
A BT might be embraced by their non-religious family because they gave up “Talibanism”
January 31, 2013 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm in reply to: How Much Money Does the Israeli Government Give to Kollel Families? #927150zahavasdadParticipantYup, that one. They only let you sit in the room for shiur after a waiting period?
Dont know about that, never asked that question. It isnt like Ive ever been there.
I think I did hear you had to fight for a chair though
