Giuliani Says Gingrich Might Be Better Candidate Than Romney

Rudy Giuliani said Newt Gingrich may be the better presidential candidate than Mitt Romney, making him the latest high-profile Republican to try to add credibility to the former House speaker’s surge in the polls.

“My gut tells me right now as I look at it that Gingrich might actually be the stronger candidate, because I think he can make a broader connection than Mitt Romney to those Reagan Democrats,” Giuliani said Monday night on CNN.

The former mayor, who ran for president in 2008 and toyed with a bid this year, said Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a great candidate on paper but, “there’s some kind of personal connection that doesn’t get made that the other candidates probably do a better job at.”

Romney campaign’s central argument has been that he is better able to beat President Barack Obama. Giuliani’s remarks, combined with comments by former Vice President Dick Cheney that he would not “underestimate” Gingrich, could give some Republican primary voters a different impression.

  1. Whether you are talking about “Reagan Democrats” or “Sam’s Club Republicans” or “Tea party Republicans” (not to mention some supporters of “Occupy Wall Street” who can be persuaded to vote Republican or abstain) – ROMNEY is a disaster. He’s a well-born banker and the closest he ever came to honest work was when his father (the company president) arranged something for his as a teenager so he could see how the over half lives. Gingrich may not be perfect, but he’s a lot closer to what most Americans can related to than Romney.

  2. Mr. Giuliani thought he himself was a strong candidate in 2008, but he was very wrong then.

As someone who fears the election of any of the current Republican candidates, I do not know whether to root for Gingrich as President Obama’s opponent because Newt will scare off the swing voters that the winning candidate needs, or to root for Romney, so that if Mr. Obama loses, at least I will not be so scared that I feel like moving to someplace safe, like the Judea or Shomron.

  3. aku: I heard that Romney actually took a number of failing US companies and turned them around into powerhouses like Staples and New Balance and if he was presenting himself as this he might connect better w/ people.

nfg: There were alot of people ready to move out when Reagan was elected but Hashem had a way of turning that out for the good.
