  2. what is going on! This past week has been terrible. the loss of so many great people suddenly at such young ages. Was he a healthy man until the end?

  3. REBBE! REBBE!, HOW I MISS YOU ALREADY SO MUCH! I REMEMBER WHEN I LEFT THE MIR 4 YEARS AGO, YOU ASKED ME TO COME BACK TO YOUR SHIUR. HOW I MISS YOU NOW. YOU WERE SO CARING TO EACH AND EVERY TALMID! YOUR SHIUR WAS DELIVERED WITH SUCH CLARITY, MASTERFULLY WEAVING MEFORSHIM INTO POSHUTE PSHAT OF THE GEMARA, RASHI, AND TOSFOS! HOW CAN YOU LEAVE US SO SOON? THE WORLD STILL NEEDS YOUR TORAH AND WARMTH! OY, HASHEM PLEASE! AD MOSAI?! BORUCH DAYAN HAEMES! MAY REBBER BE A MEILITZ YOSHER FOR ALL HIS FAMILY, TALMIDIM, AND ALL OF KLAL YISROEL! WRITTEN WITH TEARS, A TALMID

  4. To clarify:
Reb Nosson Tzvi’s wife is also a Finkel, the daughter of R’Bainish ZT”L. Rev Elya Baruch ZT”L was the son of Reb Moshe Finkel ZT”L who was a Brother to Reb Bainish. That makes a first cousin to Reb Nosson Tzvi’s wife. (Reb Nosson Tzvi is I think a second or third cousin to his wife)

  5. What a tragedy! I spent many years in his Shuir as well as enjoying Shabbosim at his house and can tell you that he was a real tzaddik. He had a special kesher to the American bochorim. (Yes, he is related to the Rosh Hayeshiva – from both the Rosh Hayeshiva’s side and as a first cousin to the Rebitzin).
U’macha Hashem Dimah M’al Kol Ponim.

  6. does anyone know if there will be a hook up to the leviya in new york?

Editors Note: YWN is working with family in NY to try and arrange this. As soon as there is something concrete, it will be posted.

  7. Boruch dayan ha’emes. He made every American bochur feel right at home. Each made each of us feel as though we were his favorite Talmid. What a geshmake shiur!

  8. Rabosei whats going to be? It is unheard of such tragedies in chodesh Ador?!?! Is this the month of Simcha? What has happened?!?!?! Mi She’omer L’olumei Dei…

  9. We get orphaned a little more with the passing of each of these great people. How Sad! We must stay strong and daven to hashem for mercy!

  10. This is unbelievable and heartbreaking. Fellow yidden, we can not just go on the way we are. Hashem is telling us loud and clear that we must change something. These past couple of weeks have been so scary. Let’s work on the reason we lost the Beis Hamikdash in the first place. Sinas Chinam. Let’s talk to, think of and act to every precious yid with respect and dignity. The new cycle of Shiur Yomi on Shmiras Halashon and Chafetz Chaim is starting on Rosh Chodesh next week. It might change your life. We have to do something!

  11. I wasn’t in his Shiur but he alway took the time to schmooze with me in lerning and it was always gishmack. yihi zichro baruch.

  12. As of know levaya is going to be at 200 am new york time The Mir office in new york /lakewood is still working on a hook up
Reb Eli Boruch was a gadol Batorah and a tremendous baal middos
    Zechusei yogan oleinu

  13. Baruch Dayan Haemes. Rebbe will be sorely missed!!

    yweditor:

can you make either an online streaming hookup or a conference call so that his talmidim not in the ny/nj area will be able to listen in. Yasher Koach!

Editors Note: As previously said, as soon as there is a phone number/hookup for the Levaya it will be posted. YWN is working hand-in-hand with the family and the Yeshiva to have this arranged, and will be done shortly.

  14. Does anyone know about what time R’ Finkel ZATZAL was niftar? May He be a malitz yosher for all of klal yisroel! May this be the start of the geualah! AMEN!

  15. i didn’t know him personally, but i would see him in the Mir and we would dance on shavuos to the Kosel, we danced last shavuos to the kosel he was to b’simcha over the Limud Hatorah the he/us were zocheh to learn together. what a tremendous loss.

  16. he had the remarkable ability to bring the best out of everyone.he was the one who inspired everyone to excel when he was only 17 years old.
I mean everyone . the older yunge leit and of course his comtemporaries. he did not push us up he drew us up . he raised the bar every day.he made us want to emulate and to imitate R’ nochom. He made us crave to say chaburos. he stirred the bais medrash like a straw that stirs the drink. He created the excitement. he created a competitive spirit with his brilliance, his extraordinary depth, his creative mind and his wit and humor. He was a 17 year old mass of Torah energy and joy. He made the MIR as much as anyone.

  17. OY!OY! WE LOST A REBBI!
KLAL YISROEL LOST A REBBI WHO TAUGHT TORAH WITH A GESHMAK,A REBBI TAUGHT MIDDOS TOVOS BY HIS PERSONAL EXAMPLE.HE WAS A REBBE THAT EVEN HIS ‘SICHAS CHULIN WAS TZRICHIN TALMUD’.WHO KNOWS HOW MANY WERE ‘NEHENE EITZA VSHUSIA’ FROM HIM.

  18. If I’m not mistaken, the time difference between NY and EY is now 6 hours. Does that mean that the levaya will begin at 5:00 EST?

  19. Rebby is with his father Reb Moshe, his grandfather, Reb Lezer Yudel, and his great grandfather the Alter foon Slabodka now.
I feel like crying. Sitting in shiur was like a mahadura tinyana of Matan Torah. I never understand a shiur untill I came to his shiur. All of a sudden I had a rebby who could talk tzum zach and be masbir things so klohr.
He cared so much for all of us. I know a bochur who couldn’t sleep in his dira because of the noise. Rebby had that bochur sleep in his apartment! He gave him his guest room. The stories could go on…

  20. Here in ERETZ YISROEL we already changed the clock to summer mode so it’s now seven hour difference to EST.
I.E. please disregard my login name for a topic like this it’s unappropiate for it.
Besuros Tovos for all of Klal Yisroel Amen!

  21. 24, only simchas, R’ Finkel was niftar at about 4 AM. My brother, a cohen, was sleeping in the dorm building, which is the same building R’ Finkel slept in. My brother was woken up to leave the building at 4 AM.

Oy! May Hashem comfort us all. What a great loss!

  22. REBBE always had a smile on his face. I will never forget how much time and efort REBBE put in to make sure I was confident before I went on my first date. REBBE took me on a walk for about an hour until REBBE felt I was confident to go. After each date he took me on a walk & spoke to me as if I were his own son asking me how it whent, and to give me more confident for the next date. REBBE will be truely missed by many thousands of talmiddim . ( A talmid in a oceon of tears.)

  23. Kol Haloshon is also carrying the levaya and will ARCHIVE it as well. It can be heard by dialing 718 906-6400 and then pressing 810.

  24. IF EVERY TALMID that he had alone would come to the livayah already the whole giantic mir building would be over crowded.

  25. I was in his shiur in the Mir twenty years ago and have fond memories of his ahavas and cheskas torah. Although some say he was overshadowed by Reb Nochum and later Reb Osher this is unfair as he was a talmid chochom of the first order and, like most Mirrers, an onov par excellence.
    Yehi zichro boruch.

  26. Rebbe!! Rebbe!! – We feel so lost – how could you not be here with us????

Such a warm kesher with all your talmidim, such a godoil batoiroh, yet even when you had such a large international following, you still went every bein hazmanim to learn bechavrusa with Rav Chayim Kamil zatzal in Ofakim.

Your hachnosas orchim was few and far between, and of course most of all, the ge’oinus of your shiurim, the brilliance of the way you brought everything together to give us all such a deep, clear havonoh in each sugya!

Boruch Dayan Ho’emes – May you be a malitz yoisher for all of klal yisroel, umocho Hashem dimoh me’al kol ponim.

  27. A special thank you goes to Ephraim Blumenkrantz from Mir Yerushalayim Brooklyn/Lakewood office, for overseeing the arrangements of the hookup both on the American end and on the Eretz Yisroel end, to assure that all Yidden on this side of the ocean can participate in this final Kovod Hames – Bisuros Tovos.

Editors Note: To set the record straight: A special thank you goes out to http://www.duvys.com for arranging the hook-up for the Levaya.

    Period.

  28. It was known by us Mirers that those bochorim who were desperate to become chasanim would buy “choson Torah’ at Reb Elya Baruch’s minyan on simchas Torah and it was garenteed to become a chassan that year – apparently it ALWAYS worked, when being approached by several bochorim that “Rebbi’s a ba’al mofes” he humbly answered “I give all these monies to very needy chassanim and kallah’s in yerushalayim – it’s the zechus of this kind of zedoko that makes it happen – NOT my mofes”
Reb Elya Baruch Zatza”l was a great Tzaddik and a tremendous onov!
Yehi Zichro Baruch, May we only hear futre Besurois toivois!

  29. KLAL YISRAEL HOW MANY MORE GEDOLIM NEED TO BE NIFTAR FOR THE SAKE AS A KAPARAH FOR THIS DOR? KLAL YISRAEL HASHEM IS SHAKING US TO WAKE UP!!! PLEASE LET US WAKE UP! AND LET US DO A COMPLETE TESHUVA! WE LOST SO MANY TZADDIKIM/TZIDKANIOS THESE PAST WEEKS! HOW MUCH MORE TZAAR DO WE NEED?

  30. Rebbe, with tears flowing from my eyes I tell you that the lessons you taught us and love you showed us will never be forgotten as they are a part of our lives every single day. BARUCH DAYAN HAEMES

  31. I heard from a very Choshuvah Yid that Moshiach must come this Nissan because it’s unheard of to have so many tragedies in such a short amount of time and Nissan is the Zman Geulah. Whether he’s right or not everyone should do Teshuvah and busy themselves with Gemilas Chassodim in order that we bring Moshiach Bimheiroh Amen…

  32. I remember in 1998 the Rosh Yeshiva Had a Heart Attack. At the Seudass Hodah The RY said Boruch Hashem he could still be mekayem the Mitzvah of BECHOL LEVAVCHA.

  33. Boruch Dayan Huamas, I knew him from my years learning in Yerushalayim, he was a very warm person who you could shmuess, very down to earth, always had a good vort to say.

  34. HE WAS MY REBBE 5 YEARS AGO HE WAS A REAL TZADDIK HE LOVED EVERY TALMID OF HIS HE CARED FOR EVERY ONE OF THEM I CAN’T BELIVE THAT HE IS NOT AMONG US ANYMORE

  35. He worried so much about Shiduchim for individuals of my family that the RY never met.He would red them shiduchim ,work on it, he would ask me everyday whats doing .

  36. i sat 2 seats away from him this past rosh hashana and my father father had kiddush with him!! what a shock. Yehi Zichro Baruch. the smile on his face was worth it all. may he be a meilitz yosher for all of klal yisroel and his mishpacha as well. oy vey. tatte in himel!! when will u bring moshiach????????

  37. This is shocking. Although those he knew him knew he had a heart condition and a couple of heart attacks over the years. However it is still a shock to lose somebody who after meeting him the first time made you feel like you are the only talmid.
I learned by him for a year and a few of us started chazuras hashiur by night seder.
I am in awe and in tears. I remember the parshas Chaya sara shiur in his house friday night which you could not move it was packed. Always with a smile, always a good word.
The rebbitzen is English and always had a special something for the Americans. Rebbee we loved you and will never ever forget you.
When you get up there please do not forget us. I can go on and on but one thing always stood out that was his Middos. We will never forget.

  38. What a terrible loss. I learned by Rebbi about 20 years ago when the shiurim were given in what was then his mothers apartment. What an uplifting experience that was, we all felt like Hillel, squeezing into the dining/living room, pressing to be able to see our Rebbi giving his wonderful shiur every day. So many people in the room, and we all felt like he was teaching us specifically.

Last Pesach I had the zechus to bring my 2 sons to see Rebbe when he spent Yom Tov in Monsey. As soon as I walked in the door, although I hd not seen R’ Eli Boruch since I had left the Mir, I got a kiss as if i had just met my own father. He was so happy to meet my sons. He told them about the time I was in Yeshiva and gave them brochos to grow up to be Talmidea Chachomim. If I had only known it would be the last time I would see him, I would have appreciated that time some more.

    Yehi Zichro Baruch

  39. I am currently a talmid by Rav Elya Boruch and I am so heart broken nobody can replace the warmth and love he displayed for every talmid.I just came to America for Bein Hazmanim and right before I left I went to say goodbye and we were stam shmuzing for over an hour and I felt such varmkeit sitting alone wih him and seeing his warm smile and now I feel so empty to know that i”yh when I go back to Eretz Yisroel next zman I will not have a Rebbe who will give shuirim with such beauty and clarity and geshmak and I will not have a Rebbe who shows such varmkeit to each and every talmid and a Rebbe who any talmid could talk to in learning or about anything that is on the talmids mind and a gevaldige gaon in torah and in everything
BILAH MOVES L’NETZACH UMACHAH HASHEM DIMAH M’AL KOL PONIM V’NOMAR AMEN
    Besuros Tovos only I”YH

  40. I was never zoicheh to learn by him, but i am currently learning in the Mir, and hearing the heartbreaking sobs of Moron R’ Nosson Zvi Finkel Shlit”a giving his hesped, and so too R’ Arye Fin kel Shlit”a just made you feel how great he was. Adar is a zeman simcha, but we have had many tragedies from Rosh Chodesh Adar Beis in Merkaz Harav till today. May we only hear of simchos in kelal yisroel, and may we be zoiche to the geula shlaimo soon. Yehai zichro boruch!

  41. Dearest Rebbe,

We heard the news-broke down and cried,
Wherever We turned, all were red-eyed.

Our world had collapsed-with no warning at all,
Now we’re left alone, so helpless and small.

We wish this was just a bad nightmare that could disappear,
But reality has hit, and left us in despair.

Many long walks from yeshiva- through the park,
But now its all so suddenly dark.

Like an only son- We were made to feel,
We don’t want to believe this tragedy is real.

We can still hear your voice-talking to us so calm and unrushed,
As if there were nothing else on your agenda, your love for us just gushed.

Your humor and sharpness to us you relayed,
Your brilliant smile brightened every one of our days.

Your connection to each of us begins to show,
When our tears can’t stop-a continuous flow.

Your face will forever shine in all our hearts,
In our everyday life-in every part.

Rebbe we beg you-we know you hear,
Please don’t forget us, your children you held so dear.

You never stopped doing for us, day or night,
We ask you now to use all your might.

Take our tears with you to Hashem and scream,
His precious children-it is beyond the time to redeem.

The way you helped us all,to grow with pride,
Continue to daven for us until moshiach will arrive.

We will find no comfort until we see you again,
When the day will come and end our pain.

Words cannot describe our deepest wounds,
But we know it will heal, very soon.

Umacha Hashem dimah me’al kal panim,
Rebbe We will greet you soon with moshiach ve’nomar omein.

  42. I was in his shiur for a year. What a special and unique person. always knew how to make everyone feel good. He set me up with a chavrusa who was a Talmid from Rav Nachum and did anything to make sure I could shteig. He always invited all the bochrim to his open home. I stayed one year for pesach he must’ve came over to me 10 times to see what I needed and how many meals I’m coming to him. He once realised that I needed some money and just walked over to me and put a few hundred shekel in my pocket. Who knows what he did behind the scenes in tzedaka and chesed not only for his Talmidim ,but for litteraly all of Klal Yisroel. Please daven for all your Talmidim for a yeshua. I’m still in shock. Hashem have rachmunis on us and please bring Mashiach.zcus yagen alenu

  43. To #48 and #50: We clearly need to do Teshuva now! I asked a well-known tzaddik about the lesson from the Mercaz HaRav attack, and he directed me to the Ohr HaChaim on Parshas Shekalim (the week it happened), in Shemos 30:13 (“ubederech remez”). The Ohr HaChaim says that when Hashem takes tzaddikim from us at an early age, it is because there is a gezera on Klal Yisrael and they are supposed to be mechaper on the dor in this way. But this is only if people then improve themselves, otherwise there would be more tzaros R”L. He says that after tzaddikim die, we usually see tzaros afterwards, evidently because the people didn’t do proper teshuva.

  44. #58, I too learned by Reb Eli Boruch during that tekufah. What a glorious year of learning it was! Rebbe made learning a living a pleasure! I close my eyes and I’m transported back to shiur in his mother’s apartment. Every good vort accompanied by that trdae mark twinkle in his eyes.

  45. BD”E. Rav Elya Boruch, ZT”L, was one of the treasures of the Mir. He will always be remembered by his thousands of Talmidim for his Ahavas Hatorah & concern for his Talmidim. Yehi Zichro Boruch.

  46. A broken talmid. EH., that is a very beautiful, well written piece. You should give it to your friends and R’ Finkel’s family to read. They will appreciate it. May your tefillah be answered soon.

  47. chaimlevi

thank you so much for bringing down the ohr hachaim. i actually was saying that this morning, when a gadol is niftar its a kaparah for klal yisrael, and look how low we are that we need to lose so many gedolim, for our sake!

  48. It is truly astonishing how many tragedies occurred during this past month of Adar. Mi SheAmar LiOlamo Dai, Yomar LiTzaroseinu Dai.

Umacha Hashem Elokim Dima’ah Meial Kal Panim and may Hashem bring the geulah sheleima bimheirah viyameinu, Amein.

  49. #61, A broken talmid,
Very well written and a very moving poem, I suggest you send this in to the Hamodia and yated in order for others (and talmidim) to appreciate the loss to Klall yisroel and be awakened to teshuva and halevai we should all be zoche to do teshuva shelaima and thus be zoche to the geula shelaima bkorov beyomeinu!!!!!

  50. I was Zoche to share a shabbos meal with this Gadol Hador. My roommate is Reb Finkel’s niece and she invited us the last shabbos of the year to eat by him. It was an experience like no other. Reb Finkel was so warm and you could see a light emnating from within. I remember asking his wife, who is American, why she married an Israeli. She answered, “I married a Talmid Chochom!” May Reb Finkel be a Meilitz Yosher for all of us. May Hashem grant a Nechama to his special wife and remaining family.

  51. Raboisai,

I echo here what all of us have been saying about rebbi as he cared deeply for all of us. For me personally he was a lifeline when i was in the mir and in his shiur.

One thing i would add is that the mishpacha now more than ever is probably in need of a keren for all their tzrochim. A few other talmidim i have seen in the last 24 hours have expressed this sentiment as well. Would the oilam like to join in addressing this need?. Rebbi did so much for us, this jesture is the least we can do to not add additional daagos to the tzorah of being without a father zeidi and husband.

    Any suggestions?

  52. I was in HaRav Elya Boruch’s Shiur for Bovo Basro 12 years ago. I remember how he began telling us that until now we were learning how to learn, Now we start learning for real!!
I will always remember his warm smile and how he always made time for all his talmidim. When my parents came to visit, he welcomed them as if they were his mechutonim, and wanted to invite them home (in Arzei Habirah at the time) for a meal!
Does anyone know who his wife’s family are?

  53. I can’t just imagine walking in to the little apartment next to the ezras noshim (the last few years) and walking into the dining room and not seeing that smile that captivated from all sides he cared for every talmid as it was his own i don’t want to keep on writing and writing because by now everyone gets the picture but when i was in the mir and i had a bronchitis he came up to my dirah (palace) to visit me and he was so upset how do you live in such a dump not even mice should live here where is the phone and the call was placed to my parents who were in a warm climate at the time and he said how could you let your son be in such a dirah either you get him somewhere else or i will take him home right now he really cared and also he asked me to wait to make my vort for a week because he wanted to participate because Rav Shach ZT”L told him that you should never interrupt a zman for a chashunah and he came with such a simchas hachaim it was radiant i could keep on going and going but i would like the Rebetzin to know how many more children they really have yehi zichro boruch TNZ”BH
