GOP Lawmakers, Sheriffs Voice Opposition to New York’s Plan to Give Illegal Immigrants Driver’s Licenses

Several Republican elected officials are voicing their opposition to a proposal in the Democrat-controlled New York state Legislature to issue driver’s licenses to immigrants in the country illegally.

State Sen. Daphne Jordan, of Saratoga County, and Assemblyman Jake Ashby, of Rensselaer County, will be holding a news conference Tuesday morning at the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Troy, where they’ll be joined by other local GOP officials.

All of them say providing licenses to those without legal immigration status is a bad idea for New York state. The Republicans say such a move will jeopardize traffic safety and compromise public security.

Senate legislation sponsored by Bronx Democrat Luis Sepúlveda would allow immigrants in the U.S. illegally to obtain licenses, something that’s already allowed in 12 states.

  1. Unless the idea is to issue them a license without requiring them to pass the driving test, why is this an issue? A drivers license is not proof of citizenship, and it proves only ability to drive. Normally we honor foreign licenses, which are much more dubious, so why is this a big deal?

  2. They can fly with those licenses, licenses are used for many purposes given the illegals the comfort of living as if documented.
On the other hand If this allows them to get insurance ( which I don’t know about) we will probably be safer.Besides, then they can pay traffic violations and not just run away.
