DA Hynes Announces Indictments in Crown Heights Robbery & Assault

da hynes.jpgKings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes today announced the indictments of Namor Clarke, 17, and Basean Parker, 15, in connection with a robbery and assault in Crown Heights last month.

In the 16-count indictment, the top charges against Parker and Clarke include Assault in the First Degree, Robbery in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and Robbery in the Second Degree. If convicted, they could face a maximum of 25 years in prison.

The indictment charges that, on May 15, Clarke and Parker attacked Alon Sherman and stole his cell phone and bicycle, while Sherman, 16, rode his bicycle along Albany Avenue in Crown Heights, to buy his younger brother baby formula. As a result of the attack, Sherman suffered a broken jaw, contusions and lacerations around his left eye socket and had to have his jaw temporarily wired shut.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney David Klestzick, First Deputy Bureau Chief of the Green Zone. Paul Burns is Chief of the Green Zone.

  1. It is about time that the real perpetrators of crime in Crown Heights get their just desserts. The Jews of Crown Heights have suffered way too long to have their safety neglected by DA Hynes!

  2. Just so that we understand this whole shmira thing. I thought after reading previous stories that shmira is some new, Kahane type thug movement.
    For the record:
Both shmira nd shomrim provide a great service to the CH community.
They both have good people and some that are just “looking for action”.
Shmira is NOT the new kid on the block, but it is actually the first kid on the block and shomrim is the break away in CH.
It does not make one better or more professinal or worse. It started as shmira, had internal issues and split.
It so happens that the second group was smart enough to choose the name shmorim, which is recognised by the police and all of a sudden they turned shmira into villans.
Lets daven that they can knock their heads together and make sholom and one org, since they are not helping anyone by arguing.

Good news: my partner who lives in CH told me that everyone now calls both shmira and shomrim and each group tries to get their first, so maybe it does work to have competition -:)
