The ex-cop who yelled “gun” before a Long Island police officer was killed in a “friendly fire” shooting is a retired NYPD veteran who has an annoying habit of listening to scanners and racing to locations where police are called, sources said yesterday.
John Cafarella, 58 — a former Emergency Service Unit sergeant out of East New York — has spent his three-year retirement nosing around crime scenes and offering unwanted help, the sources said.
“This guy really had no business being at the scene,” Nassau cop-union president James Carver said. Nassau County detectives are investigating Cafarella’s role in the tragedy that resulted in the death of Geoffrey Breitkopf, a plainclothes cop, who was shot and killed by an MTA cop as he approached a crime scene with a rifle hanging from his shoulder.

This guy is a menace.
I thought it was just the teenagers on my block who had scanners and raced to the scene of every hatalah call.
A court order prohibiting him from coming within 20 miles of a crime scene would be nice — and thats only if he was not involved with this case! Otherwise it should be more!
He shouldn’t of been there? He was on the force till 3 yrs ago, do u know how proud he was of his job?
Do u know how many decisions he had to make being on the force as an ESU Sgt?!
He Buffed a Job?
Any marine that was on the force will proudly put up a bumper sticker.
Any Vietnam P.O.W. Will letter up his car with fake bullet holes and flags.
Don’t be silly, even bochurim who buff calls do it as a hobby. Is it better to hang ou n goyishe places R”L?
Be proud with who you are, be quiet about what others are.
(Show me 98- Proud Buff)
BBuser:
A Marine displaying a bumper sticker is worlds away from a retired Marine jumping into a war zone.
Listening to the radio and buffing jobs is not a good use of time. Buffs have been known to get in the way, put themselves and others in danger, and (for Hatzolah at least) create privacy problems [yes, it’s on the street and the patient can be seen–but the patient doesn’t need others coming specifically to gawk].
Like any group, some buffs are harmless. But since there is no identification of “well mannered mature buff” versus “out of control jerk,” it’s hard to tell in the middle of incident which group you belong to.
Lastly, don’t set-up a false argument. It’s not a choice between being a buff OR hanging-out in goyishe places. The choice is between listening to life and observing it or doing something more worthwhile.
