During the past four days, the actions of Peleg protesters have been shown over and over again in the news as well as the print media, leaving a growing number of Israelis questioning how chareidim can act in such a fashion. There are already too many stories of persons, including avreichim and their wives, who were delayed for hours due to protests, which appear to have led to countless hours of bitul torah.
The attached statement was signed by the Gadol Hador, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita pertaining to the Peleg faction of the litvish chareidi tzibur following four consecutive of protests and mounting violence and attacks against police and other law enforcement agents.
Additionally, Rav Chaim in his letter, Rav Chaim is alluding to the recent actions by Peleg Bochrim against the head of the Ohr Yisrael Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Yigal Rosen.
It is pointed out that all Peleg-affiliated rabbonim agree that violence, blocking streets and attacking law enforcement agents is absolutely prohibited – but when it occurs, no one speaks out.
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 5778
I have heard, and my stomach is turned, regarding a recent matter where the Honor of the Torah has been cast downward to the lowest depths by empty and depraved individuals who have insulted one of the leading Torah educators in our generation. They have done so with various machinations that cannot even be put into print. They act as sheep who have no shepherd, how there is no [longer any] fear of Heaven in this place! Woe to us that such things have happened in our days!
Therefore, it is up to us to strengthen ourselves greatly in the study of Torah, as a mida keneged mida. Through this we shall merit to raise the banner of our Holy Torah.
