Arab Male Targeted in Apparent Hate Attack

Nassim Abu Ramuz, 21, told police that he was assaulted by drunken Jews simply because he is Arab. The resident of the Ras el-Amud (Maale Zeitim) area of the eastern capital told police that the attackers came in to the gas station where he works on Friday morning at about 01:00.

Nassim told authorities they pulled into the pumps facing the wrong direction and when he asked them to turn around the vehicle, one responded “I am high and cannot be bothered”, followed by an empty beer bottle being thrown from the car towards a bucket. Nassim then explained he told them the bucket was not a trash can for the empty bottles, which was met with ethnic insults, pouring beer on the pumps and eventually a physical assault.

Nassim realized quickly the situation was deteriorating and he ran to push the panic button. In the meantime, the occupants of the vehicle, who were outside the car, began beating him.

The victim was hospitalized for a number of hours in Shaare Zedek Medical Center. Investigators are hoping the incident was caught on the gas station’s surveillance videos.
