On Sunday, 7 Menachem Av 5773 it was reported that Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita decided to tap Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef as his candidate for the Rishon LTzion post. Rav Ovadia made the official announcement on motzei Shabbos. It was also reported that as a result of the Gadol Hadors decision, Rishon LTzion Rabbi Moshe Shlomo Amar will back Rav Yitzchak, in line with the wishes of Rav Ovadia.
Kikar Shabbat reports on Monday, 8 Menachem Av that this is not so and Rav Amar remains committed to his candidate, HaGaon HaRav Tzion Boaron. According to the report, Rav Amar continues to work overtime on behalf of his candidate and that the Rishon LTzion has met with many members of the 150 person voting body to encourage them to back Rav Boaron.
The report also states that Rav Amar also met with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, asking him to back Rav Boaron too.
