Lieberman Meets with HaGaon HaRav Auerbach Shlita as Yerushalayim Election Nears

aurYisrael Beitenu party leader MK Avigdor Lieberman met with HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita as the 18 Marcheshvan municipal elections in the capital nears.

Lieberman arrived at the rav’s home in the Shaare Chessed area of the capital on Thursday morning, 29 Tishrei 5774 in an effort to persuade the rav to endorse Moshe Leon in the mayoral race. Leon is the official candidate of Likud/Beitenu, Shas and the unofficial Ashkenazi chareidi candidate.

In recent days, the HaPeles newspaper affiliated with Rav Auerbach and his Bnei Torah party came out strongly against voting for Leon. The party is running in the election and Chaim Epstein is seeking the mayoral slot, a most unrealistic effort most believe. The meeting with Lieberman lasted a few brief minutes. After leaving the rav’s home, Lieberman reportedly traveled to Bayit Vegan for a meeting with Yosef Petrov and Yisrael Wiesel, who are close to Rav Auerbach. Lieberman fears that the votes that go to Epstein will result in a win for the incumbent, Mayor Nir Barkat.
