Conservative Speaker’s Appearance Ignites Protests at NYU; Multiple Arrests Made

pChaos erupted at NYU when controversial personality Gavin McInnes arrived to speak Thursday evening, with angry protesters coming to blows, students getting arrested, and McInnes himself getting hit with pepper-spray.

McInnes, a conservative actor, comedian and co-founder of Vice Media, was invited to speak at the Kimmel Center on campus by the NYU College Republican group, according to the student blog NYU Local.

His appearance sparked a protest by other students, including the NYU Anti-Fascists, who said McInnes “has a long track record of using incendiary language to attract media attention and frenzy.” They referred to past articles he’s written and podcasts he’s hosted in which he used derogatory words to describe transgender women and to the actress Jada Pinkett Smith.

Protesters began gathering and chanting outside the building before McInnes arrived, and when he showed up, they began cursing and shoving, video posted to social media shows.

Video showed police vans filling up with protesters in zip ties. It’s not clear how many were arrested.

The visit came a day after another controversial conservative’s planned speech prompted clashes at a university on the West Coast.

  1. “a long track record of using incendiary language to attract media attention and frenzy”

Sounds like a valid description of the leftist language used against Trump.

  2. The Left is intolerant of real free speech, and is inherently totalitarian and anarchistic.

Along with their party, the democrats….

  3. Can anyone explain this to me? We are observing college campuses holding protests against conservative speakers, inhibiting freedom of speech while exercising their own. If these protests are humane, with signs and chanting outside the area of the speeches, that is a right they have. But once they begin the violence, they should be arrested. Once released, they should return to the campus to discover that they have been expelled from the university. They should also be banned from receiving scholarships for anything anywhere.

I could not care a bit if the college itself has political leanings. Such violations are an abuse of the privilege of higher education. They should be expelled, and lose their rights to outside funding for their education. This expulsion should appear on their transcript, much as a termination from employment becomes part of someone’s work history.
