Rockland County: Police Warn Residents About Black Bear Sightings

A big, furry visitor has prompted a police warning to Rockland County residents.

Eleven-year-old Amanda McNulty and her mom were walking their labradoodle Wednesday night in Nyack when they spotted a young black bear, about 15 feet up a tree.

Amanda says it “was crazy.” The bear came down a short time later and lumbered away.

Clarkstown police later got word of other sightings.

They’ve urged residents to lock up potential bear snacks. Bird feeders and pet food should be indoors. Garbage cans should be closed.

Says police Sgt. Brian Gorsky: “If there’s no food, it’s going to go away.”
