The Yahadut Hatorah Party Begins Pushing a United Siyum HaShas Forward

Representatives of Degel Hatorah and Agudas Yisrael on Thursday met to begin moving ahead plans for a combined major ‘Siyum HaShas’. Shas representatives did not participate according to a Kikar Shabbos News report.

The persons involved have been toiling with the conception there would be one large combined siyum for all chareidim, including Shas. To date, they have failed to find a suitable venue, as some of the venues large enough to accommodate tens of thousands, are not approved by police.

On Thursday, the representatives visited a giant hanger located in Beit Raban (Givat Washington), a youth village located in the Chevel Yavne Regional Council near Route 7, and to move up the siyum to ‘Zos Chanukah’ due to the hanger’s availability. The representatives met on Thursday morning to discuss the matter.

Kikar News reports that Shas was invited to attend the meeting, but no one came to represent the party because the party hasn’t yet decided if it wishes to participate or host its own independent siyum. The meeting was held in a hall in the offices of the Nachal Sorek Regional Council. Council officials participated as well.

Following the meeting, they visited Givat Washington to see the venue. They are now waiting to hear from police if the venue is acceptable. Considerations for police include area roads, and if they can accommodate thousands of buses, as well as public transportation in the area.

  1. Considering that Daf Yomi itself was initiated and propogated by Agudas Yisroel (led by the Chofetz Chaim and Gerrer Rebbe on the initiative of Rav Meir Shapiro), the rest of the world who picked up on the Daf Yomi system ought to follow Agudas Yisroel in creating a unified Siyum.

  2. This brings me back to the last day I ever saw Rabbi Moshe Sherer z”l.
It was early 1998 during the last day of the Am Echad mission (to militate against the Reform and Conservative movements in Israel).
At a private meeting with the Belzer Rebbe, Rabbi Sherer introduced me, in Yiddish, as the one who organized the Siyum Hashas in America. The Belzer Rebbe took my hand and said (in Yiddish): “I am jealous of you; what you were able to accomplish in America, we were not able to do here in Eretz Yisrael”.
